My husband dug this last weekend. It is heavy but does not have the patina of brass,it's more blackish brown. The back is concave and in the center is a square hole.

Maybe it's part of a drawer pull. This one is not the same but shows what I'm suggestingFashion-40pcs-Single-Bronze-Antique-Drawer-Pulls-for-Kids-Modern-Cabinet-Hardware-Closet-for-...webp

It does look like the trim plate from a drawer pull as relic nut suggested

I would also think a drawer pull back would be a safe guess.

My First thought as well, Could be all Copper ? but Likely it's Brass .
IMO an old Pull , Id check for stamp numbers on the reverse if it's a more modern Pull.

I'd Keep until "For Sure" tho.

The square hole and scallop design reminds me of a sword or knife guard, bot looks small in your pics. Here is a couple---thMMD90YUB sword 1.webpthRA06L9CL sword 2.webp

The only thing that makes me think not a drawer pull is the concave nature of it. It seems like it would be flush up against the wood? Digging440 years, yes the hole is too small to be a sword guard for sure and probably a knife guard too. Thanks for the suggestions though.

I vote for the drawer pull too. As for a knife or sword guard, the holes in them are practically never square, but rectangular. This is for strength at the blade's weakest area, and also (generally speaking) for convenience in forming the blade.

Drawer pull escutcheon, like others have pointed out.

Well I don't always insist on being a non conformist but because of the square hole, I think that plate at one time slipped over the square shank of a door knob assembly.
