Hi everyone, this is a great site.
I bought a cheap metal detector about 8 years ago to keep the kids busy while I was cutting wood up at the family camp which was a farm about 200 years ago. I ended up catching the detecting bug more than they did and have progressed to better detectors (currently using a Fisher F75 I got on Kijiji but am now looking for something water proof, either a Whites MX Sport or Garrett AT Max, opinions?) as we have lots of salt water beaches and fords thru old streams to check out. I also know of some old swimming holes that are on my radar.
Our first find was at our camp, an old key that was exactly half way between the house foundation and the barn foundation. When the kids were smaller we made up stories about that key. You can be sure that whatever it opened was locked when it was lost, and somebody walked back and forth between the buildings looking for it.
The oldest find so far is a Nuremburg Jetton from the 1580's found on a still operating farm that was settled by Germans in the late 1700's.
The best beach find so far was a Charles 1 rose farthing from the 1620's found by one of my sons.
No gold yet though, with the exception of a gilded button.
I can't wait to get back out now that the ground has thawed.
