first is a Bull Ring,goes through the nose of the bull.

No patent date ,but found at turn of century home

Absolutely a Bull Ring. It is broken as the missing area should be a full circle with a set screw to accept and capture the hole on the side that slides in between. Too much beer? Or did that make sense?
