Hey folks. Some of you may have seen where I posted on a related Facebook group a couple weeks ago about a big wheat penny hoard I had discovered. If you didn't see it, the short version is that I ended up with about 1,070 or so pennies from a single hole at an old homesite. You can watch that hunt happen on our YouTube channel "Virginia History Detectors." Well, I went back last weekend and after finding a few wheat pennies I had missed on the surface I decided to open up some test holes around that very spot. What happened next was nothing short of incredible. I turned over a scoop of dirt and multiple Large Cents and 2 Cent coins just started falling off the shovel. I knew I had hit something a lot better than a pile of wheats so I went back to the truck and got my camera to record the whole experience. I dug for the next hour or so during which I managed to recover 54 Large Cents, 39 2 Cents, 10 Flying Eagles, King James II halfpence (1685-1687), and about a dozen or so wheat pennies. That’s 250 years of coin dates from within the same hoard and I'm now an official card carrying member of 1600's club which has been a goal of mine. My theory is that the same family had an area under the floorboards where they hid valuables for generation after generation, stuff got lost or covered up with dirt, people died, etc. Many of the coins still have paper roll wrapping around their edges and many were coming out of the ground still stacked and stuck together. This hoard hasn’t yielded any silver or gold yet but I’m holding out hope that it’s down there somewhere. I will of course be going back and to excavate and sift the entire area and we'll soon post the video of that as well! It was an unforgettable once in a lifetime experience and I cannot wait to get back in there!!! Below is the link to the video of this hunt... enjoy and please subscribe to see what we find next when we sift out the rest of the hoard!!! Thanks!!!

This is amazing. I'd die of joy if I found this! I think there absolutely has to be some silver hiding there! Congrats. It's funny 54 largies could probably buy a lot but it's only 54 cents!!!! Congrats! I found a large cent spill with three largies and I was over the moon! Haha!

Also voted banner. It might not be gold but it's still awesome!

I watched two minutes so far.
So you are out of breath cause you ran back to the truck to get your camera,
But you came back today for more?
So this isn’t the video of the 1000 penny find?

No. This is the return visit. You have to go to his YT channel to see the original find.

If I ever found that much I would probably dig for another twenty feet!

Outstanding!!! Congrats!!

I'd say hidden coin collection, owner passed away and it was forgotten. Regardless I'm floored

:notworthy:

Banner vote in!

Copper, silver or gold. Historical find. Keep looking for the rest of stash. Amazing.

Holy cow that is just amazing, and whenI FIND ONE OR TWOI THINK I HAVE DOME WELL.

Remarkable! Somewhere your going to find the silver / gold !!!! Good luck. :occasion14:

spread out your search!

I've been thinking about this hoard. There is an 1856 LC in the hoard, the last year for them. In Feb. 1857 a new law went into effect. Large cents were phased out in favor of the new small cent Flying Eagle. Holders of large cents had a certain amount of time to redeem their large cents for silver. After that time, they weren't redeemable. Maybe the owner of the hoard missed the deadline and the coins became worthless as far a legal tender. If they were worthless to the owner, maybe they were just tossed out. Just my imagination running wild. Gary

OMG AWESOME! Congrats! :icon_thumleft: I'd be shaking so much the coins would be falling out of my hands as fast as I was picking them up!

1070 pennies in one hole. I'm guessing the owner of those pennies got tired of all that weight.
