Went to Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island, FL today to dig up a chest of gold coins. Our satellite guy provided us with the research and location. He also sent us a scan that looked like a box shape. We also had GPS numbers. I had a six man digging crew of seasoned diggers. We got a hit with the Pulse Star Pro II detector and it showed non-ferrous. We got down to six feet fast but then we hit water. We widened the hole and went down another foot but the water kept rushing in faster than we could bail it. Four Sheriffs Dept. deputies stopped by to watch and then reminded us to fill in our hole before we left. So we couldn't use a dredge or a motorized auger. Holmes 1.webp

This is how close we were to the waters edge.

Here is Joe checking the hole with our Aquapulse with the 14" coil.

This is the deepest we got.

We determined the chest was 11' deep and there was no way we could reach it with simple hand tools.

Sounds great to me, but I sure wouldn't be posting on here until after I got the chest. I have no idea how but people can get your exact location from some pictures if you camera or phone uses GPS.

I would think that if there is a chest down there, the chest would have ferrous parts in its structure

I would think that a probe would have answered the question of it being just a few feet deeper. Did you probe the bottom of the hole?

Villagenut has the right answer.....6 foot hole + 6 foot probe = 12 feet. Add the right tip and you may be able to sample a bit of what's down there.

If you fill the hole back in when you're done, why is it forbidden to use a dredge or auger? The beach replenishment barges use a dredge, why not you? Sounds like some government agency rearing it's ugly (and mindless) head again.

I know right where it is via background markers. No need for gps

I would not have left till I got it no matter what.

I'm guessing that you haven't tried to dig a deep hole in the wet sand at the ocean. Digging it by hand, there is no way you can keep up with the sand filling back in.

So,I am in Miami fl, and I have a mini excavator and I can not work it........come on let’s make some magic happen!!!

A mini excavator wouldn't do the job either on something 11' down in the wet sand. The excavator would end up in the hole along with the target. It would take a dredge or some BIG equipment to go that deep at the beach.

Low tide will be favorable come June 5th

A2coins,it,s all good because that is only one of 3 chests on that part of the beach lol if you want to take a shot at one of them and there is one on private property, beach side just message me and happy to show you where and dig dig and dig.Oh p.s it,s only 9 ft.down to the top of the chest.

Go at night w auger to get sample. Would not take thick shaft to get down 12 ft in sand.

We did a clandestine dig on Cayo Costa in 1992. I built a cofferdam out of 55 gallon barrels, sawing them in half and putting 1-1/2 barrels together to make it big enough to climb down. I even made ladder rungs bolted to the side. We were able to get down 12 feet before the barrels started to collapse. Of course they would not allow anything like that on a public beach today.

Sounds like Oak Island, Florida style.

Were the Knights Templar on Miami Beach for spring break ?

Well well Salvor.. tis been awhile since I have seen a thread from you.

Depth estimate would be around correct if on Florida beaches... Just keep in mind before getting too excited about the whole thing.

The "box shaped scan" could be numerous things... Like one real example I can remember turned out to be a propane tank... WITH propane still in it. heh

My guess is a bbq grill!
