Ok so I found this buckle at an old home site 11 inches in the ground hear in central Florida about a month ago. But I did not know what it was untill the other day while looking at some buckles that mudslideslim posted and there it was same buckle only I'm missing the CS tongue part. I never would have thought I could find a Civil War buckle hear in Florida but then again I am close to where Fort Dade was and Fort King Road. I have been back to try to find the other half but without any luck yet and I stress YET, I am being very optimistic. The other pics are of some othe relics found at the same site. The last pic is an example.

Great buckle from an obviously-great site! I think you'll get more xlnt relics out of that place.

The item having a 'strap slot' at the center of pic 2450 is decorative doodad / rosette from a saddle, I think.

Cool buckle!

Those wings and that badge are really cool too. I'm going to have to hunt for some real relics this season not the junk I usually dig.

Congrats!!!..........aa

Wow that is a lot of relics...stuff Great buckle.

found one just like that last year here in southern ohio.... no idea how mine got there either... just like you I didn't know what it was til way later..... I never did find the tongue to mine..... hunted n hunted that little yard...... the house wasnt built until the 1890's..... so idk how it got there to start with........ but I would like to see about buying the other half.,.....

Yep. Nana nailed it. Two piece Victorian buckle there.

Now as for the wreath buckle...

In battlesites, camps, or just about ANY other place, you'd have little to no chance of locating the other half of your buckle...BUT at a house site you have great odds. If there is a trash pit there, or filled in cellar hole, you should dig them out (if you can--and if the property owner OK's it). My last sword belt plate is the ONLY one I have ever found a keeper for...and it was found at a house site a week and a half ago (See the Banner for more details).

Keep searching. As I said before, you've got good odds.I
I dont know about Battlesites but I have to dissagree with you on camps, trust me they are found in camps(complete)often times the Wreaths are found more often then the Tongues but they are often found.I didnt find the keeper for my plate, you were very fortunate to find that!!

I am more interested in the wreath for the two piece buckle. I have gone through (not page by page) Sydney Kerksis' book on Plates and Buckles of the American Military. There are some wreaths that are close but not an exact match. There were two militia plates that look very close and both are from the 1830s. Then there are some state plates that look a great deal like it. But none match the wreath exactly. I would bet my money on civil war or before. Knowing the general location of the find would also help in narrowing down what might have happened and who may have been there. Good luck and try to buy a match if you can, it will make the whole piece ten times as valuable.

You have some nice finds...and it was brought to my attention that it appeared you found a Butteryfly Buckle like mine....well, it wasn't exactly like mine..but I took the photo of yours and placed it with mine. Yours, of course, is on the left side and the one I found at Pipsico at our last hunt, is on the right....

I was told mine was called a Butterfly Buckle. I hope when I go back in Oct, I can find the other half!!!!

Again ... nice finds!

Nice wreath. The style of the wreath is abit different than most CS wreaths though. Nice find.

Tongue and wreath buckles were in style and use from the early 1830's through the Civil War.They dont seem to be as common in the Civil War sites as some of the other buckles though. All of the varieties (there is alot of them)are not in the books.
