So I went out to a pond where there is stuff for the kids to do. The first part of the hunt I started poking around and picked up a penny signal that sounded odd. I dug down and pulled out four pennies stuck together with some plastic stuck to them.
I kept checking the hole and pulling more out.
Here they are cleaned up. 20 in all earliest was a 1960 nickel and latest was a 1970 dime. Most of the pennies were 60-64. Wish this baggie would have been emplaced/dropped 10 years earlier! Still an awesome find for me.
Moved into the woods after and went to kick a "piece of wood" to get my coil in a spot but it was really heavy...biggest piece of petrified wood I have ever found.
Now this is where I hope some of you can learn something from a hunch I had. I realise there are a lot of pros on here so many of you may not benefit from this.
I made a drawing to help explain. I knew the area was older and had a modern parking lot put in that was cut into the hill. I made a top and side view. I decided to hunt this hill because it was steep and hard on the ankles most people like to stay comfy lmao! t was about a 45 degree slope. I worked my way up and down in a line until I had a decent coin which was a wheat penny. I then moved all the way over to the side of the parking lot at the same elevation on the slope and searched straight across. I found two wheats, two mercs, and these other items. All the wheat and silver was at the same elevation when the bulldozer made the cut and pushed the dirt over. Those are the dots on my picture. I will also add that contour lines when close together on a map mean a steeper slope. When they are further apart it is a gradual slope. I suck at drawing.
So, it was starting to get darker, and I tried one last spot where I thought people may have walked to get to the pond. Pulled out what I thought was three wheat pennies, but the last turned out to be an indianhead in the same hole as the second wheat. It is a 1903 or 1909
So, I had a successful day, will hit the last area again when the rain let's up. Still trying to get my girlfriend her first silver coin.
I hope at least one person can benefit from the idea I had today that actually turned out to produce two mercs for me.
