Horse shoe from the 1600's & Counterfeit George II copper

I finished my chores, took Benson for a walk and there was still time to hit a really big new field just down the road. This field is next to one of the old creeks here, and not that far from the field behind the church next door. It took a while to get there, but when I did I couldn't believe the size of it. I only spent about 3 hours on it, just criss crossing and getting a feel for what might be there. The first part of the field was empty of all signals, then I started getting iron hits, then nothing, then iron. So I thought "What the heck" and dug one of the iron signals and up came this horse shoe from the 1600's. I kind of knew what it was, but had it confirmed by the UKDFD. The rest of that part of the field only had lead, buttons, a couple of modernish Georgian coins (only 1700's), but also a big tooth and lots of pointy flint. Anyway, enjoy the pics :icon_thumleft:

Thanks for the info IP :icon_thumleft:, I would love to post more Georgian coppers, but the ground around here is normally very unkind to copper coins. Even the Viccy ones are pretty badly battle scarred, thats why I'm more interested in the hammereds and such artifacts that survive the ground. The reason for the original "Horse shoe" title was it's date range, more or less from our Civil War period.

It's very close in design to one that is rarer and would have been worth a few hundred min. even in that condition. I like them so think they're all good finds.

You have id'd a counterfeit before for me, so from now on I will post ALL Georgian that I find, hopefully one or two will be in a better condition for you mate :icon_thumleft:. After your first post on this thread, I have read more about Georgian counterfeits, VERY interesting . Take care mate

Value aside your coin is actually a fairly rare one to find. As long as I've been on this forum there's only a small group that have been posted which are as good, or maybe interesting is a better word. Pretty much everything you see will be very close to the Regal issues. One thing to look out for is impossible dates, as long as the legends are correct, a coin like that is well worth investigating.

I have to agree with HMN, in that anything 1700's especially early 1700's is a fairly old find round here. Just seems strange to see it called "modernish", but everything in perspective, it can certainly be moderrnish to you.

I have been quite lucky in finding a half dozen decent (1700's) coppers (one silver) this season so far, and at least 3 buckles from the same period.

Sure would like to find something Viking, (could happen in Newfoundland)

Good luck out there tommorow Hammered.
