How can you tell if a "S" minted Kennedy half dollar is silver clad or not?

I have searched. But i can't find anything definite on how to tell if a "S" proof half is silver or not. Is there a way to tell by the weight or anything? :dontknow:

Yep, the Silver Clads should weigh 11.50 grams or very close to that, while the Clads weigh only 11.34 grams!

weight, rim color, sound when dropped, and to some degree year

1968S, 69S, 70S were all 40% silver and weigh 11.5gm

1976S are either CuNi (11.34 gm) or 40% silver (11.5gm)

1992-Present S proof are either CuNi (11.34gm) or 90% silver (12.5gm)

However you should be able to tell by the rim color and patina

1995 s are rare silvers --key to the series.

Simply look at the rim. End of Story.

IF the rim is ornage/red/copper looking - it's a cupra nickle coin./

If the rim edge ( the reeded part ) is white/silver. Then the coin is silver.

Hope this helps.

I have found 40%ers that are pinkish orange and some that are black.

Like anything, experience is your best friend.

People can also paint rims white - most of us have seen this.

Just get a small gram scale that goes to the tenth or hundredth of a gram, and weigh it.

It's odd that no one mentioned the tissue test, works every time.

enlighten me please to this method.

Google the tissue test for silver. IT won't work if the coin is tarnished.

You should easily be able to tell if it's a silver coin. This is not rocket science.

You need to only look at the rim. 1 in 1000 silver 40% coins can be almost tricky to tell.

Not sure what makes the silver '95 s. as there were less silver '94s and '93s minted. I'm just saying.

1993 (silver) S - 761,353

1994 (silver) S - 785,329

1995 (silver) S - 679,985
