As I've said before, I'm new to the hobby & haven't been out due to all the white crap that is covering the ground.

I was talking to a friend about MDing & we both wondered how come we have never seen anyone MDing. I live within a mile of 3 schools, a county fairground and 2 parks. I have never seen anyone at any of those places.

How come??

Do they get out earlier in the morning than I do, or do they go out at night?

Yep....I live in the city and I have have not run into another detectionist yet.Just at the beach.
It's all yours....to search. I detect mostly early mornings and towards sun down.

A lot of it has to do with the fact that the people have made metal detecting a taboo in society. There are so many secret laws thrown on the books in every state that you don't know if you will be fined or arrested on any of these sites. And whats worse, even if there are no laws stopping you from detecting but you need to ask to make sure, a lot of the time the people you ask will not know so they will say No out of hand, much easier for them than looking up to see if its allowed. Its a shame.

maybe you never took notice before?I run into or see fellow hobbyists from time to time.

That could be true. I know that when I started to paint, I noticed colors more than before.

That's a good thing! I see detectorists in "my" territory and I growl to myself like a terrier with a cat nosing his food dish.

charlie p :D lol

Same here and I live in England, perhaps thankfuly theres not too many detectorists in the world. Britains population is around 60 million with iv'e read only around 10.000 active detectorists. How many detectorists in America ?.

I have been doing this for quite a while now and only have come across two other people ...groundfisher from this forum who I became friends with and was able to hunt with a few times and another guy that was a quack and wouldnt shut up and followed me around telling me every technical aspect about his machine and all the book learning he knew about that machine (which I could have cared less about....you win some you lose some....he was wearing shorts and black sox which should have warned me right away..... :D :D :D

I think it's just because you haven't noticed them over the years (and didn't come by at times when md'rs happened to be there, etc...). I have worked some parks and schools since the 1970s, as have others in my town. But I gaurantee you that if you were to ask a neighbor right across the street from those same places, some of them would say "we've never seen anyone in that park or school".

An example: I worked a yard back in the 1970s with my first detector, a 66TR. Later, in the early '80s, I got a new machine I wanted to test in a zone I'd previously worked, to see if it went deeper or whatever. So I returned to this same yard, now about 7 or 8 yrs. later, knocked on the door, and a person said "sure, go ahead, no one's ever hunted it before" (I didn't bother to tell them I had hit it). Then in the late 1990s, I got yet another machine I wanted to compare to earlier technology, so I again knocked on the same house's door. This time, yet another person answers (daughter? new owner? I dunno), and says "sure, go ahead, no one's ever hit it before" doh :)

I've never saw anyone in my area detecting. I have seen some on the FL beaches.

Most seasoned dtecting veterins have cloaks of invisibility. I also wear mine when the wife is wondering where the $700 from the checking account went.

You only find things when your looking for them. The more you start looking the more you'll see.

Keep @ it and HH!!
