How do you handle common folk while MDing : Their Questions / YourAnswers

I have no control, If kids come around my time is no longer mine. I cannot ignore them, and we always become good friends, they become polite and well mannered.
I show them little buggers respect and they will return it. When I am detecting, they become my team member and if I find something they share. That is part of my fun and I hope it never changes. I show adults the same respect and they go their way.
I am not so taken with my hobbies that have to be left alone, and never resent sharing time with anyone or my little buddies.
When I was a kid, I knew three old duffers like me, they taught me a lot, I'll never forget them and follow their example. I have seen lots old people that bug folks, wanting company or to talk to someone. Thats not a problem with me, talk to me is OK, if you don't, I wont bother you. Kids are different they love learning new things and until they are adults, it is our responsibility not just the parents to pass on what good things you know, that would make a dog gone better world.
Off the topic and something you may try. When I am fishing and I get a fish on the line, if there is a kid around, I get their help, I act like I need help, getting busy with something and tell them to come over and catch this fish for me. It makes their day,
and I made a buddy. They become fishermen or fishergals and I had much rather do that than catch one myself, thats me.... Gnewt

Well put Gnewt. I feel the same way. Besides, you never know when someone will fill you in with some info (or maybe even permission) on a new spot to MD at.

For those that want to be left alone - the #1 surefire way - talk to yourself. Nothing keeps the "bad nosies" away better than walking around mumbling and such. :D Years ago, when I lived up north, I commuted by train. There were some mornings I just wanted to sit by myself - sunglasses + mumbling = peaceful ride in to work.

most of the time adults usually don't bother me at all. but when the children ask what I'm doing. I tell them that I'm making the park safe for them, they usually leave pretty quick after that

Took a trek to Croatan and the oceanfront this morning....hit Croatan first. About 3 folks asked me about metal detecting and I told them. I also showed them the pieces of sharp, rusted .. looks like fence wire .. that I pulled from the beach at Croatan. Either it was dumped there from the beach being filled up or possibly washed in during a storm...there was alot of it!!!

Then headed to the oceanfront, was greeted to sweet music by a bunch of guys, in which one of them metal detects! We talked a bit and then we went on our merry ways. Had two young ladies come up, as they slowly approached me and politely saying, "Excuse us Ma'am, could we ask you a question about metal detectors?" I explained to them about my machine and showed them what it could do. I told them about Kelly Co, as they have a range of detectors for them to choose from and I told them about TNet...so we may have two new members soon, I hope! They were very sweet young ladies.

A few others, as I walked by, asked questions and I gave answers. I just love people and could talk to them all day!!! The finds weren't all that great, some quarters, dimes, pennies, nickels, lots of trash, a matchbox car, a leg to a kids toy, and an earring (prob junk jewelry).... but I made some friends today! A stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet!

You are right.

Guess I'm just a little different.Kids and/or people seldom come up to me because of where I hunt.So when they do I try to answer their ?'s or talk a bit because I can remember when I was a youngster I was always asking ?s to ball players, carpenters, etc. and not any of them was ever rude to me so I feel that if they really didn't want to know, they wouldn't bother me and since it happens rarely,I don't mind at all.BTW,I consider myself a 'common folk'.

Typical question : Hey mister watcha doin ?
Typical answer : Lookin for leaking electrical lines

no one seems to have any further questions, :icon_scratch:
