I'm mostly in CRH for Silver. While I can certainly appreciate the beauty of something like a 1972-S CuNi Shiny Proof Half Dollar, 90%+ of my CRHing involves me ripping open Half and Dime rolls like some kind of animal and then searching for Silver edges and the numbers 196-. Separating 1982 and earlier Pennies is easy enough, but with Pennies there's a ton of errors and stuff I could look for. The problem is I don't know which errors are worth my time, and which ones would be like me searching Dimes extensively for the 1982-P no mintmark instead of blasting through a box in like 15 minutes. So, the question is how do YOU search your Pennies?

Education. Learn the varieties. Before you walk, you need to learn to crawl. First, you need to realize that the United States doesn't have a Penny. They are called cents.

Ryedale. Then run copper through again to catch any wayward zincolns. Hand count and separate any wheats and Canadians. Bag in ZIPLOC of 1000, then put three bags in a coffee can.

Dump zincolns at bank. Don't bother to look for any errors.

Thanks DD! That always gets under my skin also! You want pennies you have to go overseas.

I separate the zinc and copper pennies. Put any wheats aside separate from those. I'd search errors but that takes forever I'm sure. But it may be a possibility if it was one I could sell off or something.

I have yet to see a box or even a single roll that says "cents". All I see is "pennies." :laughing9:

I bet you two get funny looks when you ask for boxes of cents.

I run them through a separator (a homemade rydale wannabe) using... That puts all of the ... ones on one side and all ... on the other side...

I figure my kids might want to search through some of the ... mix someday, so I just set those pails aside.

I use ...

I run them through a separator (a homemade rydale wannabe) using a Zn cent as the reference. That puts all of the Zn ones on one side and all non-Zn (Cu+foreign+dimes) on the other side. The Zn ones go into a canvas bag destine for dump.

Then, I use a Cu cent as the reference and run the keepers through the separator. That puts all 1942,1944-1982 cents on one side and everything else (early wheats+steel wheats+errant Zn+foreign+dimes, etc) on the other side. I hand sort those to get the dimes and wheats. I hand sort some of the 1942-1982 for 1942-1958 wheats, but some I store with the later date wheats mixed in. If my eye catches an error or key date, I keep it. Otherwise, it is all about speed sorting.

I figure my kids might want to search through some of the 1942-1982 mix someday, so I just set those pails aside.

I use term "cent" or "penny" depending on who I'm speaking to. I say "cent" in the coin shop to seem refined and "penny" in the bank to seem unpretentious.

How does this sorter worker that you came up with? It would be interesting to see in action.

Actually I don't. Just shows the coin companies have idjits designing there boxes and rolls. Look on the reverse of every Lincoln and tell me what it says the denomination is. That is also what the mint says they are. Go to the mint website and try to order "pennies"
