Detector(s) used
Tesoro Cibola
This has bugged me tooooo long >:( On the BH tracker4 when ever i accidentally hit it on a rock or tree stump under the elaves it chatters/beeps. It seems to kinda subside when i really jam in the coil plug to the control box...could this be fixed with a little electrical tape or does it need a professional or something? Anyone else experience this with the tracker4?

Hand it down to your little brother, and buy a high end Fisher, high end Tesoro and or high end Garrett! ;D

Wish i could but im so low on money :-\ Besides all those detectors are useless where i hunt because id be digging nails all day :-\

Yeah - they'd be useless alright! "NOT"!

$$ problems I can understand though,

good luck,

trust me they would be NEAR useless where i am...every swing has at least 5 square nails :-\ I know theyre 100 years old but theres only so many i wanna dig in one day :D

You would be suprised what you find digging those iron signals!

The area you're describing sounds like it's very old, and worth some serious effort in removing the junk to possible find some nice relics & coins. This is what I would do if I felt it was worth it in an area like that.

Step 1: When & if the soil conditions allow (assuming there's no grass in this area), take a rake used for raking concrete and rake the soil to remove any/all the nails you can. If you have free access to this land, and there is grass in this area, rent a sod cutter, and remove the sod (which will remove the top 3 inches of grass/soil) and then rake it to remove any/all nails & junk that you can. If the area is too large to rake by hand, use a riding lawn mower that accepts a rake unit, and do it that way!

Step 2: Detect the entire area for 1 day (8 hrs) with the highest level of disc. your detector has, and repeat the process daily setting the detector 1 notch/# lower on the disc. each day until you've searched it with the lowest level of disc. This will allow you to pick/find all the goodies from the shallowest to the deepest while removing more, and more trash/junk as you go (yet also not so much in any one day that it's too much to dig/remove). After you've searched it with the lowest level of disc. and removed as much junk/nails as possible each day, now search it in zero disc. and find the deepest & oldest stuff left in the ground/area! ;D

Step 3: After you've searched the area with one detector as described above, repeat the process with a different brand/make of detector (preferably higher end), and find the stuff that the other one missed! ;D

good idea!!!!

I like that idea :o I have gotten all the metal in the fields except the iron. But all the iron in the field is jsut square nails. When im in the woods i switch to all metal mode and it usually turns out to be something besides a nail.

If there's as many nails as you're making it sound like there is,,,

they are 'masking' a lot of deeper & better targets "guaranteed"...

funny thing is almost every hole i dig for soemthing good, there is rust/square nails in it. Shouldnt this be masking the good target?? Maybe my detectors just such a low level.
ill have to do some tests tomarow with a pile of nails and a coin, but i think this detector wil find stuff even when masked. the deeper targets are hopeless with my detector :-\ wish there was a way to increase the depth, but i dont think theres even any aftermarket coils for this thing...

Haven't found much iron with my CZ-20 (mostly searching salt water)...But my old 6000DI could pick out a dime between two large screwdrivers and without picking up the screwdrivers. I'm not saying that they weren't masking the signal somewhat; I'm just saying that I'm not surprised that you would pick up good signals without realizing the iron was there. Heavy rust halo effect would sometimes fool it, but once I learned what to listen for it didn't fool me.

Now, if that dime were under the two screwdrivers, it might have been a different story. The masking would have been much greater. If I were in an area like you describe, I would have an apron full of nails to make sure I didn't miss anything.

It sounds like a decent detector if it can ID good targets under nails/junk, and

it sounds like you know the detector and or sounds pretty well, and know when/what to dig!

I'd still remove any/all nails & junk though, and comb that place hard!

LoneWolf has a lot of good ideas and all are good. I would only ad: 1. Turn down the sensitivity a little. 2. Discriminate out iron if you can or buy a detector that will. 3. Get a smaller coil, if your detector can use one get another detector that will. I know all too well what it can be like to have a nice area with good history only to find 100's, no 1000's of AHHHHHHH! NAILS! Good luck.

thats a great approach lonewolf! thanks for the tip!

I have a site loaded with nails, nearly disintegrated iron, and giant hunks of iron. I hunted it most of the summer with an Excalibur. I forgot there even were nails there. However, I think I dug every big chunk of nasty iron in the place.

For my effort I took out a bunch of Indian Head pennies, some nice silvers, a very nice 19th century bottle, one ring, some great tokens, and various old items. So far I've made nearly $200 on ebay selling some of my finds from that spot.

But, it's like lonewolfe says, you need to move up to a better machine as soon as you can afford it. Those brands he mentioned are awesome. I think some MAY even be better than the Minelab.

I don't find much with mine either Bob,

the cz20 does a pretty good job at ignoring iron (and what it doesn't) you can tell 99% of the time that it is because of the "sound" it makes! ;D

the only time/s I get fooled are with the old large square nails (#16 or larger) crusted up that have the halo around them, and or sometimes on a larger round/square piece. Other than that, she does a good lob and goes deep in the rgt soil/conditions!

Actually, lonewolf is right, I had a iron signal that I dug (nail), as habit I always scan the hole a second time and got a strong signal, I found a 1943 quarter dollar. Goes to prove to dig everything, plus I have found some pretty cool iron relics.

Count your blessings. I bought a magnet...

one of those new killer magnets. The kind that will hurt you if you're not careful...strong magnet.

I tied it to a length of twine and dragged it about 3 feet across me front yard and it had a handful of rocks stuck to it!!!!
Everywhere around here...everything is iron. Even stuff that's not iron is iron.

You just learn to deal with it. I figure when I go to a place that has low mineralization i'm really going to be good. I'm going to find everything... all the treasure...mine...i'm finding it all!!!

Well, maybe i'll find some of it...heh.

J

Where did you get that magnet, would like to add one to my tools of the trade.
