How does this happen?

While they weren't released for circulation, I don't think they're being collected so much. I run across very few 2002-2005.

My bluebook shows that the 2001-P's weren't released for circulation, either. But I just picked up a whole bag of mint state rolls, all 2001-P.

They did make a gang of them. My book shows they weren't released. Well, they musta changed their minds, LOL! Maybe all us coin roll searchers started up the circulation again? Heheheheh! Wouldn't that be something?

I've searched $1060.00 worth of halves, and have yet to come across anything later than a 2001. :-\

When I used to be able to get boxes I would find 02-06 pretty often, but when I found out that none of the dealers around me would buy them I quit saving them and just returned them with the rejects.

If I would have kept them I wouldn't have had any cash available to buy more boxes to search.

Some people on this board seem to have a lot of liquid cash to buy many boxes at one time, but I could only ever afford to have 1 box worth of halves tied up at 1 time.

Even with their relatively low mintage to other years, the way it was explained to me by some dealers was that half dollars are generally not collected as heavily as other denominations-quarters,dimes,nickels etc.

And so if a particular part of the country runs short on half's available for delivery they throw in some bags of the newer one's to make up for it,and over time they get mixed into the boxes we receive.

So that appears to be why some areas seem to find a lot and other part's of the country only see a few.

Has anybody on this board ever been able to sell 02-06 halves to a dealer above face value?

I'm very curious because I have also read of others on this board buying Ike dollars to resale to a dealer for a profit,no dealer around me buy's them and there is one dealer who occasionaly hand's them out in change to customers,so clearly he is getting them for face value only-probably from a bank.

I havent marked any , but I turn them all back in. I kept a P & D of each year 2004-2006, just
to have. Ive caught and released probably a couple hundred total of the 2002+ year halves.

Maybe I should hold onto them - ah well. I collect enough stuff already LOL.

Good luck !

I sold some circulated Ikes a few weeks ago at a coin show for $1.10 each. After I sold them I asked what he sells them for, he claimed $1.25. Most of the dealers either offered $1.05 or a not interested.

Most, but not all, banks around me never have any Ikes and whenever I ask, they laugh and say if any show up the tellers buy them. But I do find an occasional one here or there.

Antoher idea is if you can't sell them for above face value and can't afford to keep 'em, Ikes are always good tips at places where you want to stick out from the crowd (at a busy bar, for example).

I got a bag full of 2002 -2006 and it kinda killed my intrest. I rolled up the nicest $350 worth and cashed the rest..... Im thinking about cashing some more cause I cant get rid of them.

Good info, I also never see anything later than 2001. I have blank spots in my book for 02-07.

I have only started seeing 02-07 stuff in the past few months, but now I have a little over an entire roll of them.

I think I will see hang onto them. The number minted per year is only 1/10th the number minted up until 2002, so in a few years the scarcity might increase their value a bit.

I trade the 02-06 to collectors for 40% 1:1. This also works for the 70D and 87 halves.

I also offer to trade dates that they need for more silver. For example trade 58 and 59 Franklin for 3 64 Kennedy. This way they get the dates they need and I get extra silver.
