How far out in the ocean do you hunt?

Not talking about sunken ships but.. lost rings.. I suck a beach hunting.. but I always hunt the shoreline.. didn't want to get my etrac wet.. I now have a at pro I'm going out in the water with.. is there a key spot you hunt at the beach or just random wading around? Thanks!

look for black sand areas, high traffic areas and if you find a concentration of coins or lead fishing weights, grid that area and hunt if hard. Good luck !

I have never hunted salt water but spend most of my summer months in fresh water swimming holes. My nephew {lifeguard} calls me a lifeguards worst nightmare. I go out nose deep with my head tilted back, on tip toes with a twenty pound weight belt on to keep me grounded. I can't swim! You have to go where others won't to get the goodies!

i'm 6 ft and I hunt up to my neck. I hunt wet sand, in the water and dry. It's everywhere. Made some of my best finds in the dry sand. I usually start in the deep end and work my way in with the tide. Having said that I don't live by the tide. I go to the beach and work the beach no matter what time the tide is.

Rookies I suggest a PFD.... And being able to PP and dig a target on shore blindfolded,........ with a bunch of little kids trying to tackle you.

I go as deep as the surf will allow.....usually no more than waist deep. In the pounding surf, it's just too hard on me and the equipment. Sometimes when it's like a lake, I'll up to my neck, but, that doesn't happen very often in our neck of the ocean.

On the ocean, we'll usually hunt up to our necks.... usually...
Not if it's murky or a lot of bait fish in the water.
I usually hunt alone, not that there's not other ppl, lifeguards, tourists around, but
one (especially one as little as me) doesn't want to become an unexpected "snack"
for something looking or testing for supper.

Only other problem at neck deep, when the target is foud, I can dig a deep enough hole,
I start having to go underwater, as the hole gets deeper. Especially, if tide is coming in.

I have a lot of respect for the Atlantic and Pacific water detectorists and if I was to hunt those waters I would HAVE to invest in a P.F.D.

Ill wade to chest deep and also use a mask and snorkel to about 8 feet deep.

I go dropping tide n hunt behind the breakers but u often get swept away from targets. Anywhere the ocean lets u work is good enough. I finally lost my first n second pairs of sunglasses n got annihilated by breaking waves last year. Usually I go over or under but it's tough trying to go through n it's a lot if strain on your equipment. I reinforced my headphone cord for when they get slapped off your head. Good luck water hunting isn't easy

Depends completely on surf conditions. Some Florida beaches are like detecting at a lake, while on Long Island, NY, you'll swear you're in a washing machine knee-deep sometimes. Low tide is your friend, especially low tide in the evening when everyone has gone home. Good Luck!

Never detected in salt water but like fresh water chest deep to using a snorkel and wading out as far as i can until I start bobbing like a cork. If I got to do as much water detecting as I would like, I would buy a weight belt.

I've never hunted the ocean (or even seen one) but 35-40 yrs. ago 60 Minutes did a show on a couple of guys that detected along the Boardwalk in N.J.. Seems that back in the day the thing to do was to go with your Honey along the Boardwalk, make a wish and toss a silver dollar as far as you could. Also when you got a divorce toss the ring. They were really cleaning up at the time. Good luck.

I detect mostly the gulf area. Depending on the weather, tide and type of headphones I am using on at the time. I will go up to my neck if I have to.
