I live in west central Wisconsin with winter setting in how far south do I have to go south to be able to dig in the dirt?

Well we don't have dirt, we have sand down here in Lakeland. Pretty easy digging, beats the hello out of digging at my place in PA, it's all rocks and clay.

Plus it's a lot warmer down here.

Grounds not frozen here in VA yet either, but when it does I can usually find a place in the woods or under pine trees that is only froze on top. Just makes me work a little harder.

Wanna dig some horseshoes here in TN.? Year round "digging". Bring a pick ax, some energy and a lot of patience. Maybe just maybe we'll find one of those small round things in a hole... forgot the name of them. Not musket balls... their small, thin and sometimes have dates on them... Sorry I forget the name of'em. It'll come back to me if I see one!!!! But I know my horseshoes... halves and whole shoes.

As of December 29th, there is snow on the ground... Season is over for now.
