How many of you CRH'ing vets weigh your rolls???

Hello all, I just found a decent digital scale that weighs up to 2.5 lbs max. It is a postage scale, and I am pretty sure it would be perfect for the process of weighing my rolls of halves to "see if there is silver in the roll". Now, my question is this, How accurate is weighing the rolls? Are there any of you guys who just weigh the rolls and do not open them, (making it a bajillion times easier to dump them?) I have wondered how accurate it is, can it distinguish skunk rolls from rolls that might just have 1 lonely 40%er in them? Or would the roll have to have at least 1 90%er in it to make it possible to know you need to open that roll? Does anyone have any interesting expiriences with weighing rolls? (like a roll that has silver weighing less than a roll without any silver?) I have noticed that with halves you get a very wide variety of thin coins, and thick coins... So i wonder if weighing can be truly accurate at all. If anyone here just weighs the rolls, and that is the technique you use, please give me some feedback on what scale is recommended. Thanks. good luck everyone, hh.

Chris.

I don't do it (half the fun to me is opening them up and looking at them) but SF and several others will chime in here. Most likely this is what the "unsearched roll" guys on eBay are doing............
This has already been discussed at length on this forum..

I figured it has been discussed at length, I have read little bits and pieces about it on different threads, I guess my main question, is whether or not it is possible to be very accurate? How accurate is it? 100% 90% 50%... ? I agree with you about the fun of opening, its like a little mini treasure hunt 50 times per box.

I've read the threads too.

I've been getting lots of JFK's that have holes drilled in them...I am guessing that the weights would be off in those rolls.

Clovis,or anyone else, Why do people drill holes in them?

:-\ I'm sorry GH about your 3 months no silver thing going on, you seem irritated. Best wishes to you. but I do agree with Legend, even through penny rolls, it's a mini treasure hunt! :icon_pirat:

I always figured the holes were for people to wear them around a necklace or bracelet or something. I cant think of any other reason...

Re: How many of you CRH'ing vets weigh your rolls???

I have a really good jeweler's scale and in general can tell the weight of which rolls may have keepers in them. However I have done all my testing on rolls with enders and it's usually fairly accurate (don't have time or interest to weigh every roll). However the heaviest roll I ever came across weighed almost a full ounce over the other ender rolls I was weighing and while I was super excited to see what was inside it it was a complete skunk except for that ender. So it may be fun to do tests and stuff by no means is it foolproof.

I do not weigh rolls of halves, like mentioned above, half the fun is opening the roll for a suprise.

Re: How many of you CRH'ing vets weigh your rolls???

I've tried a little weighing but I still open the rolls. However, I just bought a digital scale and I'm pretty happy with it so I thought I'd put a plug for it here.

It took a long time to find a scale that fit these two criteria: 0.01g accuracy, and also enough capacity for a roll of halves! So I found this one that goes up to 300g:

Cheap, too.

(No, I don't get a cut from this. I live in one of those states where Amazon won't do affiliate payments even if I wanted to!) :-)

Thanks, I just ordered it. It just so happens that my other digital scale (used for weighing ASE's, and silver dollars mostly) just broke, so since this one appears to have the abililty to do both... It will work perfect.

Thanks.

I open my regular rolls, just use the scale as it's a good one to see if there is any noticeable difference when I know there is at least one silver inside. More of a curiosity thing. Of course, I've found one silver coin in the last 18 boxes so I have lots of free time on my hands to weigh all those enders I've been saving.

Re: How many of you CRH'ing vets weigh your rolls???

Weighing is also very handy when you are re-rolling and you find a loose halvsie in your bag that you can't account for! :laughing9:

Re: How many of you CRH'ing vets weigh your rolls???

Weighing rolls instead of opening them is a waste of time.

The difference in weight between a roll of copper/nickel clad (11.34 gram x 20= 226.8 gm) and a roll with 19 copper/nickel clad and one silver clad (226.8 + 0.16 = 226.96) is very small (Less than 0.1%). I have learned from weighing my 1982 pennies to check for copper that many coins are heavier or lighter than they should be because of wear, dirt, etc. You would miss most silver halves because the extra weight would be balanced out by a light copper/nickel clad coin. Also if your roll is short one coin that would hide silver from you as well. Only a roll with many silver coins would be detectable.

You would also miss proofs and NIFCs

HH!

Don't bother weighing - you get a few casino halves and a silver in a roll and you would never know you had the silver.
