Folks, I am finding an unexpected benefit to detecting. I have only been going for a month or so thus far, but I am now down two pounds. I can tell that I am using muscles that I haven't been used to using in a while. I am not totally out of shape, and I am still fairly young. The digging and the swinging seem to be making an impact. Has anyone else experienced this?

Thankfully, I have preserved my weight.:notworthy:

Love it, Smokey! Haa haa :laughing7:

I know once the weather breaks and i get out i will lose weight and i need to. By getting out i will get some low stress calories burned and wont be at home to out more calories in my mouth.i hnormally work out but havent in a couple months as i keep getting injuriies. Come on warm weather.

GerryK, good onya for noticing the gentle exercise of detecting is helping you get healthier and it is great to hear about it. Another benefit from metal detecting! Getting away from the goodies in the house is quite helpful. When you go out do you carry water with you to rehydrate yourself? Your body likes being moist on the inside!! Have fun, loose weight, get healthier, find targets, meet people, smile kindly at them and enjoy...............63bkpk

Reminds me of the famous MDing commercial.

"My wife's proud of the weight I've lost, but she really proud of this". * holds up huge gold

CoinFetcher, I haven't seen the commercial. I don't watch much TV. But, I mentioned my weight loss to my father, and he echoed the same thing about the commercial.

He has started going along with me recently, and now it is becoming a family event which is pretty cool. The gold and silver is awesome, but hard to come by (as a matter of course). Being able to spend time with the family and lose weight at the same time is worth it for me. The clad, the silver, and the potential gold is icing on the cake for me, and it will come in time. I am really happy that I stumbled upon this hobby and this forum.

I put on 40 lbs since last may. Stopped smoking cigarettes on 4/23, broke my right knee on May 1st....rode the couch for a couple of months because of that, then on Labor day I stepped out of a shed in the dark and broke my left ankle. Rode the couch for a few more weeks....I'm hoping I lose some weight soon. Or my wife is gonna tie me to the car and make me.

I went on a detecting binge back in mid December last year, began at 230lbs. Hunting all the sunny days here in Texas since, and am at 213 now, and about ready for my 36 inch pants again. Being retired has it's upsides and downsides. Downside...way to lazy and a couch/internet potato, plus accellerated sleeping in the afternoons. HUnting from mid day til dusk has seriously dropped the weight. martin

Not to appear to change the subject, but a decade ago I was at 325. Started playing golf and within 18 months got to 175, where I am today. No cart, just walking in the Texas sun...

Walking is a key thing. It gets you moving and out and away from the food. I had lost 50 pounds just by walking and riding my bike before. Unfortunately i had four surgeries in three years then just as i was working out good and dropping weight last year i sprained my ankle real bad then messed up my shoulder lifting weights a few months later. Back to walking to lose weight.

Well, over the course of ten years I have gained 60lbs due to quitting cigarettes. And knocked 10 off of that by taking up metal detecting again 4 years ago... life is great !!

Austin, that is just amazing. 325 -> 175. Wow.

Metal detecting makes me hungry! HD :)

Everying makes me hungry but if i am not near the house i wont eat.
