Does it have a primer or is it rimfire?

If it has a boxer primer I'd go with .450 Adams (revolver). Aka ".450 Short Colt".

If it's rimfire I'll start over.

I'll try to clean it up a little more. I can't really tell.

is there a hole inside ? in the bottom where the primer would be located ? all non rimfires should have 1 or more holes inside. they did make rimfires that size so could go either way.

That's odd. It looks like a fired case, but no evidence of either a rimfire or centerfire strike. Slug pulled from a live round? Gary

If it helps any I have dug 3 ringers, Burnside carbines, Williams cleaners and cold navy rounds from this location. It was a large Union port during the Civil war. Also,it looked as if there was paper or something in them when i cleaned them. I should have taken pics prior to rinsing them off but i didn't notice at first. I guess it could have just been dirt or something in them. I would love to know if they are civil war period. I found them in a different area at the same location and would really like to know if i'm on another good spot. Plus they would be my only CW casings other than the Burnside cartridge. I have dug a large ziplock bag full of 3 ringers from this place.

If it's center fire I'd think .450 Adams. Also the British .450/.455 cartridge's could and probably has filled books.

It's the brass head off of a .410 bore shotgun shell. The three cannelures are a dead giveaway.IMG_1540.webp Primers were usually steel, causing the rusting in center.
