I found this old button along with some 1870s bottles and was wondering how old it is? It is made by H.WILSON PHIL.PA

There is a J H Wilson listed in "ALbert's". In business from 1873-1904.

The fact that it has a brass back may just make this one a good one. I can't see some of the other details that differenciate it from the fake civilian decorator buttons, but where is Cannonballguy? He should be able to tell you without even cracking a book. If it had a rusted out iron back, I would have been telling you to go to Jo-Ann's and get some bright shiney new ones for a couple of bucks.

Sorry cant not see well , what does the back read?

Post-CW, likely the dates given by the first responder :icon_thumleft: 1st clue is letters on the backmark have no serifs

A quote from Tice's book:

The device of most Navy buttons made after the Civil War has an anchor fluke in front of the eagle's left wing. A few Civil War buttons also displayed this device...

I don't see your buttons backmark listed in the Tice book of CW buttons , so it appears to be post CW.

It is still a great find!
