How safe do you feel when detecting?

If you base your life on statistics, and if you believe you're safe anywhere you detect.. then you're a damn fool!
Don't let those "rose-colored glasses" give you a false since of security.. the real world doesn't discriminate based on what you believe is right.. sorry!

If some slime-ball wants to rob, rape or kill someone, changing the equation by removing the gun only changes the weapon of choice. An aluminum baseball bat will suffice when committing the crime of your choice.

Also, don't bring an aluminum bat to a gun fight!!:dontknow:

When I was young I just needed running shoes. Now I'm too slow, so I do carry concealed. First sign of trouble I'm leaving. Unless they stop me. Then I'll do just what is necessary to get away.

Because you better think twice!

There are parks I will not go to in Baltimore, but there are many parks within city limits that are generally safe areas for a detectorist. It certainly is wise to visit and observe the people and activity around any park you may be interested in detecting. Time of the week and time of day can also be an advantage. For the most part I've found detecting in the city to be free from harassment and a setting for meeting neighbors. Most people are just curious about the hobby.

I've known hundreds of people in my lifetime, but only ONE was ever attacked by anyone. He was trying to deposit the day's take from the convenience store he worked at. The guy came out of nowhere and punched him in the face, breaking his jaw and knocking him out cold. He had NO chance to defend himself, much less whip out a gun. The guy took the bank bag, his wallet and his watch. Imagine if my friend was carrying a gun. He would have provided this lowlife with a deadly weapon to use on his next victim.

If you feel safe carrying a gun, do it. But don't be surprised if you still end up on the losing end of the deal. Think about all the police officers who are killed every year. They all had guns by their side and the best training money could buy, but they still ended up dead. Just my take on it.

There are many many stories out there of a ccw helping rather than hindering. A mod on a firearm forum I frequent was forced to use his or be executed along with his 2 employees. He used a split second the would be murder looked away to shoot him 3 times with his ccw. There was evidence the shooter was going to kill them and then go on a shooting spree at a nearby mall. He ended up saving his and his employees lives and possibly countless others if the perp had his way and was able to go through with his plan. Just one example but there are many out there.

There's gonna be plenty of could should would scenarios that one could play out but in reality no one has control of what's going to happen, they can only be prepared for it. Just like you wear a seat belt in a car. No one gets in a car planning on getting in a wreck. I've never been in a wreck in the 15 years I've been driving, should I not wear a seat belt and start thinking it ain't gonna happen to me cuz it hasn't yet? Many people still get killed when wearing a seat belt so does that mean I shouldn't wear one because I'll just die anyways?

It all comes down to our fundamental right and your personal choice to be prepared or not. I'd rather not be a victim if I could do something about it.

Lets think about all the police officers that are killed every year. Hmmmm....they must be in situations....
So.... friend was a wuss? He had NO chance to defend himself?
More like...could not...would not. He leaned to the left I'm guessin.
What the hell kind of a watch did he have...workin' at a convenience store?
And he was part of the plot...
Get a clue....

Gosh...There is soon much wrong with what your saying I don't know where to begin. So I'll just say that in your little bubble that you live in, you will probably be safe. Sounds like your friend has no concept of situational awareness, something that ccw'ers are very aware of and are trained in. He probably isn't the best guy to be taking the night deposits to the bank.
About ending up on the losing end of the deal. One thing is sure. If you don't have a gun when the situation arises you fore sure will end up on the losing end of the deal.
The stuff about cops getting killed and best training and all that is just garbage.

no easy answer, stands to reason that the more guns sold, increases the chances that everybody you run into will have a gun. I try to avoid trouble spots in populated areas, but I like to carry out in the woods.

I feel about as safe in my abode as I feel in the desert. Seems like theirs murders weekly and home invasions at least once a week. Now the homeinvaders just knock on the door, when answered they just start shooting.Just happened to a older couple, another opened door, was rushed, others let in through side gate.Safe-No. Now the Desert, I see persons walking in the middle of no-where, persons driveing back and forth middle of no-where,motorhomes parked in the middle of no-where, sometimes gunshots from who knows where ? Car body parts all over the desert, recent campfire pits miles from everything, new bullet shells where you think no-ones been. Do i feel safe in the desert from other persons of the human race,Hell No, from animals, snakes, and other desert varmits,Hell yes.

I think that the psychological security of knowing you are protected with a gun is already a plus. Kind of like the security of going metal detecting with a buddy. I don't own a gun though, not sure I need it though considering I hunt with a friend in the woods in small New Hampshire town. Then again, being alone, just me and a buddy, in the woods would be a ideal place for some bad to happen, in fact, it sounds like the plot for a cheesy hollywood horror movie :laughing7: Maybe self defense would be a good idea considering when I hunt alone I get worried about something happening and want to be armed in case.

Apples and oranges, Tim. Law enforcement officers are paid to respond to danger and most are easily identified by the uniforms they wear. Citizens who are properly trained and licensed to carry concealed weapons will avoid danger whenever safe to do so. You will never know who most of us are. But without a concealed weapon, your chances for being on the losing end will always be higher than ours. If you don't feel safe carrying a firearm, don't.

Nothing good ever comes from carrying a gun around anywhere. Not necessary if you're a big guy and it also gives the appearance that you're looking for trouble.
What a ridiculous comment... When the bad guys kick your door in at 3am how about you all sit in a circle & sing Kumbaya...

Most times I only carry a knife just out of laziness. I don't want to clean my 1911 after every water hunt.
Plus I have the lesche digger, which looks like a rambo knife anyways.:laughing7:

No one walks around thinking someone's going to come out of nowhere and punch them in the face. He made the deposit every night for years with no problems. It's also hard to defend yourself when you have a bank bag in one hand and the other hand is unlocking the night deposit box at the bank.

The watch wasn't valuable, but I guess the robber didn't take the time to appraise it's value while he was committing the crime.

As for the tie-dye comment, you don't know him or me. I would never hurt anyone in this world who left me alone, but if you took a swing at me, you'd be picking up your teeth off the ground.

If a "bad guy" kicks in your door at 3 AM, you won't have time to get your gun. Unless, of course, you're foolish enough to leave a loaded gun in your nightstand drawer...

No... it's in my headboard!:laughing7:

I guess I'm foolish, because mine is right on the bedstand and loaded. If it ain't loaded, it's just a club!!:censored:
