I've run into other local MD hobbyists and they always tell me they never know where to go.
Finding places to go has always been easy for me in the city. There's a real mindset and ritual I follow for doing this adored hobby.
With a little research you can easily plan an outing. I prep the night before to go hit public areas.
My best places to go MD in the city:
1-Bus Stops (mostly coins, keys and litter)
2-Curbsides in front of schools and parks, community centers, and even shopping centers. (coins, jewellery, cashable metals and litter)
3-Curbsides in front of apartment complexs and residential housing that do not keep care of that frontages. They can kick me off but noone ever does. (coins, jewellery, cashable metals and litter)
4-Foot paths connecting to parks and schools (all kinds of surprises on most them)
5-Local Parks where there's lot of elevation changes. A hill where people have trouble walking or seating areas (lots of coins and can slaw along with the odd metal surprise)
6-City hiking trails throughout the city (the odd coin and various cashable metals can be found)
7-Some Playground areas open to the public. Like soccer fields, baseball or football fields (not usually much there except where people hang out to watch)
I never hunt:
1-Private properties. (schools, residential properties without their permission)
2-Inside Tot Lots (for what it was worth I never find much there anyway. I find it's creepy being around them. Maybe it's just me...?
3-Near constant car or foot traffic on busy streets. (they make me edgy or nervous)
Things I watch out for:
1-Gangs, or crazy people
2-People approaching my back
3-Park my bike where it shows it's mine and I don't wander out of sight from it.
The reason I do it:
1-The adventure and the surprise.
2-The exercise. It can be quite exhausting at times but it's so rewarding.
3-The people I enjoy talking with. (I never get tired of young people asking me questions)
4-Of course the cashables.
5-The routine of it (I enjoy prepping my gear to go out)
6-Good weather or just getting outdoors.
7-Permissions (I have had some and will be doing more)
8-Helping people find stuff (Most satisfying part)
9-Researching and learning about my finds.
10-Understanding metals and how to test them. (I'm still learning)
11-Cleaning up what I've found, leaning what to clean them with.
12-I've had to discipline myself to be patient.
I'm sure I missed stuff, but it gives you an idea how I've come to enjoy metal detecting...
