Here's a survival technique passed down to me from my Grandpa. You have to live in a part of the country that has black walnut trees. They would gather up a bunch of walnuts while they were still in the green hull and put them in a gunny sack. They drug this sack along the ground behind a horse while riding down to the creek, to rough the hulls up. They would find a still pool, and toss the sack in. There's a kind of poison in those walnut hulls, and every fish in that pool would float to the surface and you could snatch them up. Worked then, and still works now. (Probably illegal, too.)
