Sounds like they are using a large relic shovel to make a plug in a park. Those Lesche diggers are large half circle shovels. I imagine that they make 4 half circle cuts around an unknown target and are able to make a very large and deep plug.

I would not recommend this approach in a park no matter what the outcome of the plug viability is. I prefer the low key approach where the public never really sees a shovel in my hand. I generally will try to turn my body so that the people around me cannot see the plug being cut, but if I think that the target is shallow and easily found by probing I let them see that.

It is really all about perception and public opinion.

Thanks for the tips.

It may sound like youa re being a 'sneaksy, tricksey hobbit" and having to hide, but the fact remains the digging part raises eyebrows.
All they NEED to see is the perfectly replaced plug AFTER you have covered the hole.
And if you do it right, nobody sees tHAT.

And I would again recommend the method I outlined in my first post.
As pennyfarmer mentioned, and quite correctly, people form snap impressions.
NEVER go into a park or a schoolyard with a SHOVEL, "relic shovel" or not..
You do that, and how neat you make the holes won't matter.
All they will see is that shovel.

I used a bayonet, and later a Lesche digger.
That way, no "shoveling" is observed.

Shovels (for ME) are for places like the woods, abandoned homesteads or undeveloped places where sod preservation is not as crucial.

Shovels in parks, ballfields or other public places are lazy and will do more to hurt detecting in the long run.

Good point. I am considering the purchase of a Predator Model 85:

Hopefully that will make it easier.

I should mention that I use my minelab knife that is similar to the Lesche knife. I try to be as low key as anyone can be while swinging a metal detector. Fact is that it is very hard to not be noticed. My goal is to leave no trace anyplace I go. I think the less the public knows the better.

There are people who think you are stealing from the public or are afraid you are going to find something valuable. I always put my best finds in a safe pocket and show people the trash or the pennies. Just be careful out there no matter how excited you are about something you have found.

I would put all the money I own (and that aint much) That this would work....Lights out :D

Just kidding please don't try it.
