How to hunt when the beach is busy

I live in a popular vacation spot, and every weekend morning when I'm able to get to the beach at sunrise, I always see lots of detectorists already hunting in the water. I've noticed that they all seem to be mid-waist/mid-chest deep, and they move parallel to the shore. When it's busy, though, it seems to me that I could keep from covering their already-searched territory by detecting *perpendicular* to the shore. After all, people don't just lose their stuff in waist deep water. Does anyone else do this occasionally?

I go from shore to neck high water back-and-forth detecting all the time, esp in warmer weather/water. As the tide goes in and out, you never know where people make deposits so this strategy works. Not so well when water is cold and you have a wetsuit on, however, As the wetsuit drains and refills as you go in and out, you never reach a sustainable temp and are always cold. But'good observation and I, for one, am always looking to cover land/water where other detectorists don't go.
