how were the grooves put into the small hammers and axes?

I have a bunch of these of all sizes, big and small
this is a small one
these were used to make the grooves in axes, hammers, and horse tethers
like this....... tap, tap, tap, tap, then rub, rub, rub, rub, etc. and all f'ing day long
i hope this is not boring

Lots of time in making a grove in stone. Peck and polish I guess I like seeing the hammerstones.
