This is an identical item on Ebay that I found at the farthest of three different Community wide garage sales.

Here in the middle of North Central Texas, I found a nautical treasure this last weekend... It's a large four post solid brass Ship's porthole. The glass is still intact and is 16" in diameter. The thick and wide outer flange measures 20" in diameter. The whole thing weighs 52 pounds....

Looks like this one:
Vintage Used World War II Era Large Brass Glass Nautical Boats Ships Porthole | eBay

I bought it for $50....and lugged it back to the car.
Remember, I've taken a load to the local scrapyard where they pay $2.08 a pound for yellow brass....but,.....

When I bought the ship's porthole, at the time, I didn't realize that it could be worth more than just doubling my money in selling it as scrap brass.... I'd be happy as a clam to get 1/3 of Ebay's listing. ;>) How would you sell it?

If 1/3 would please you, I would set the reserve at just under that and let the bidding start.

Calculate the shipping on USPS.com from you to Maine. Then take 75% of the cost, add it on to $190.00 and list it as a buy it now with free shipping to the lower 48. It will sell. I sold about a dozen of them last year from a 1920's boat. The largets was only a 30 lb and most of them were the "Two Dog" style, but they were a hot item and sold within a few days of listing each time. ALSO - very important --- put the words "From An Actual Ship" in the title and description. There are tons of repros out there that are fit for nothing but fish restaurant bathrooms and they are described as "solid brass" "real porthole" etc.

You'd be leaving a pile of money on the table if you scrap that porthole.

Gentlemen, thank you for your insights and advice. I've got to find some time to gather crating and packing materials, now !

A heavy and creative idea. Thanks.

Great Find Bill ! I recently bought/sold this one . port hole.webp Did the turn and burn to a local arch salvage place. You may want to check @ town if you dont want to mess with ebay. That woudl save you some time and hassle. just depends on how bad you need the dough.

What did you get for it

Good idea. I was wondering what you gave for yours and what your profit was?

Thanks
