Well my first REAL hunt of the season was an old 1800's School house, Post office, General store, that Johnny Cache Hunter helped me find with some old maps. The foundation is still there and I have been drooling all winter as I drove by. What a major dissapointment! It has been ued as a trash dump for years. >:( Trash as in toilets, cans, you name it, then dumping leaves over that. Well the old farm is part of the property, so I hit that.

First the big old tree in the yard, found a small tin with some broken glass in it, couldn't wait to clean the dirt out of it when i got home, small compass? Then the hubbys keeper, an old double headed axe, I knew he would like that one. "Honey if you think you could part with that I'll take it." :D Funny I didn't hear JUNK once on this hunt, oh I'm sure he thought it. :D Found an old road that went above the foundations, not much up on the road for a quick sweep, one heavy rusty item.

Off to the yard, should have seen my face when I first saw the gold bject in the ground, finally got it out and I think it's a part to an appliance? An old wreath ::). The front yard produced the cool heart shaped wind chime, that will be hanging in my garden once I get it cleaned and painted. Funny at an old 1800' farm I find a 1996 penny, 1997 dime and a states quarter, at least there was coins. :D

Next time is the field and old road where the factory used to be. Thanks Johnny for the info wanna go?

They already cleaned and sharpened the axe head, just need to make up a handle for it. The compass? cleaned up.

CW, my husband would love that double ax head too! That is a beautiful place you are hunting! Your husband can get a handle for that ax at almost any farm supply store. They are not expensive. Thanks for sharing your finds. Hope you find silver there soon!

HH,
Pepper

Looks like a great hunt to me Sis! Glad you found something Gerry would want too. ;D Get back out there and find the rest!!

Sounds like an awesome relic hunt! That sucks that you didn't get anything that you hoped to get. Some hunts are like that though!

Cool double bladed ax head. WTG

Way to go, CG! That wind chime will be a great addition once it's all prettied up! 8) Love the site pics!

Congrats on those finds! Nana

Thanks folks, it really was a great day to be out. Oh I did forget to mention the little tick that I found when I got home, YUCK. At least I know where NOT to hunt down there, tons more area to go.

Ticks!!!! The scourge of the earth in my opinion! I have to deal with many, as anybody who lives in Southern NJ knows, our area is horrible for ticks.

OK, WOW, I never found a double headed axe, that is a good find, I don't blame Gerry for "asking" for it. LOL, he could have any of mine if he wanted, I pile em up by the fence post in the garden. :)

The photos of the site, just scream old artifacts and coins, what a shame an area was trashed, but remember, most finds at homesteads are in general around the site and not necessarily right close to the structure. Also, where does that beautiful old road go? I did see what looked a Railroad spike in your finds, that is not an old RR bed is it? If not, search on the edges where someone might have sat to rest or even a possible work area next to the road. The road is there for a purpose and perhaps something else is located on the road further away, if available to hunt it I surely would, at least explore the area.

Hope the heart wind chime cleans up well and the axe!

Don

The old road peaked my interest too. It used to be the main trail to cross the river, the bridge that it leads to was all hand built rock. I got a picture of it at home when we took our hike 2 weeks ago. The bridge itself is gone, but the rock abutments are still there. We hiked the other half of the old road home. Dan kept saying it looked like it was used by wagons the way the ruts are. I only went about half way up the road, I was running out of time and wanted to hit around the house. I'll be sure to check the upper part of the road next time.

I didn't give up when I found how trashy the "main" part of the site was, and I will be back. There is another old road that runs to the river, I want to hit.

Yeah I hate ticks, thankfully only one!

check close to the bridge area -- bet you'll like what you find

Country Girl,
Wow :o what a nice ax. Now he has one to grind.lol.
Wish that spot was close to me, I would love to cover some of it.
Will be waiting for the next post. Hope there's gold!!!!
Joe

Nice hunt CG. I love that ax head.
Great picture of that old road too.
Congrats,
MM

Joe, come on up I'll share! :D

MM, yeah I think I should have (and will) hit that road harder, now that I know what to look for. :)

Well the Axe is now complete, edges sharpened, rust cleaned up, guess there were some concretions to remove before the handle would fit properly. Looks great I'll get a picture for you all. Did you know a double headed axe was used by professional lumber men (or wanna be's ) and requires a straight handle? Hmmm Neither did I. :icon_study:

Funny! While I was out "looking for treasure" He was cutting down a Locus tree, diging up 4 large Lilacs, replanting them in a row for me. When I got home he was splitting wood. :D Gotta have it dry for Fall. Oh and they had lunch ready. 8) At least I found him something! :D
