I know this seems pale in comparison to all the great finds being posted today, but I thought it would be interesting to hear some replies as to how this memorial got to its present condition. Firstly it weighs 3 grams but is larger than a quarter. On the back it had another memorial embossed into it diagonally and reversed text. On the face you can clearly see edge serrations and trees from the back of a Rosie, plus it says one dime and United States of America backwards. At first I thought it was squashed by a train, but as a child I don't recall mine turning out so round and legible...any ideas?? One or two word answers gladly accepted!

How & Where did you find it... :icon_scratch:

My son and I were searching a lot that was once owned by the boyfriend of a family member. Word is he received a huge settlement from the railroad for injuries on the job. He invested into very large silver ingots which our family member had once held (50 oz.). He was known to have buried ingots and coffee cans of cash on his property. After he passed, these were never found in the house, which is now gone. I was checking the back wooded area behind his lot and this rang up about 3 inched down.

That is Effed up!!!

Could it be a penny and dime that were left on the railroad tracks on top of each other? interesting find.

I say a penny was placed on top of another penny, then a dime on top. Choo, Choo..... ;D

all my cents that were left on the tracks were oblong, I never got one that was still perfectly round.

Doesn't appear to me to have spent a day in the soil.

Actually I buffed it up to show the detail better..here's a pic before polishing..but after removing corrosion with oven cleaner..ouch!

Someone smashed a coin sandwich! dime on a penny with a penny on the bottom on a hydraulic press, all the pressure is straight down

Squished coins are interesting. I found this squished quarter not far from the rail road tracks. It's much bigger than a quarter now but all the detail was squished also.

I would not have not cleaned that coin. If its an actual error coin, you probably just cut the value in half. I don't believe that is a coin that was put on a rail road track. I used to do many of them when I was younger and NONE EVER were perfectly round when finished. You need to take that coin down to a reputable coin dealer and see what he thinks. You probably know this already, but I will say it to whoever else reads this. Rule of thumb, if you are not sure about something, never clean it until its been checked out. Nice find. I think I would go back and look for more.

Steve in Michigan
