Hundreds of old bottles

I am an avid coin hunter and I just secured permission to hunt an old home that was built in 1874. The owner of the house seemed excited about seeing what I could find on his property and showed me some recent excavating he had done. He had dug up the old outhouse hole and had recovered hundreds of bottles. I scanned one and posted it with this message. He offered me all of the bottles if I wanted them. I initially declined because I know absolutely nothing about bottles, but he said if I ever wanted them just come and pick them up. I just wanted to ask some bottle collectors out there if there may be some value in these bottles. They almost all have some sort of writing on them. The one pictured says The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. On each side it says A&P Extracts. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I am definitely bottle stupid. Thank you.

The extract bottles come fairly easy, got a dozen or so myself. The old bitters, sarsaparilla, and assorted snake oil bottles that are potentially there could be a windfall. Flasks, old baby bottles and even milk bottles, these sell well into the thousands of dollars for some of the rare varities and you never know when or where you'll come across one.

If someone offers you a ready-to-go collection for the cost of carrying them out, why think twice? Take it then do the homework and see what you've got. I did make a decent buck last year selling bottles I've picked up along the way as a bit of a mercenary offshoot of detecting.

Just think, even if you don't become a collector or find the big one, you can sell them for any price and what have you lost?

Lowbatts,

You are right. I'm an idiot. I will pick them up and if they are no good I'll toss them. Nothing ventured nothing lost. Thanks

Coinshooter,

I did get the bottles. Once I sort them all out and figure out what they are I will see if I can get some pictures of the better ones. Thanks for the interest and stay tuned. I will try and get some pics out soon.

i am so fortunate to live in the UK where the bottle quality is higher. ( i mean that codds and hamiltons are much more prolific here ) I dont mind picking up broken examples of these fine bottles as I cant bear to see them lying in the groud broken or not. Anyone else have this strange habit?
