Today I Finlay got the two boxes of halves i ordered from a branch the next town over. The question that I have is, is it possible that anyone can open the spun rolls like a bank employee. The black box is new to me and also wonderer if anyone commonly get the black decalled box. The black box was pretty bad and only had 4-40%. Whats weird is that every 1974 in the entire box were marked?????????. does brinks have there own coin sorter & roller? The other box was a little better, it had 7 40% 1 90% a 2005 D ( which I don't know why its rare so if anyone could tell me that would be great), and my first proof ever, 1998 s. Is this a silver coin? mint mark is s, but the rim looks to be of clad. I am really curios whom is able to search halves that we all order.

The 98-S is a clad Proof coin. It had to be broken out of a US Mint Proof set. The do occasionally make it into circulation. I wouldn't think anyone could open one of those rolls and re-roll it tight enough to look unopened, but I could be wrong. The 74s were someones rejects, but it's strange to find so many in a single box. I usually fins a few marked halves in each box. Usually marked with red paint/fingernail polish above the head.

Your boxes look just like the ones I get, mine are mostly brown print. You can tell if the machine rolls are opened, the crimp is loose. My silver proofs have solid silver edges and the clad have copper edges.
I would say that if you are finding silver the box is unsearched.

thanks for the info, it really helps

The halves from 2002 on weren't released for circulation, thats why you don't see too many of them out there.

As far as the 74's being marked, there is a die variety known as the 1974D double die obverse. It could be another CRHer who is looking for this variety and are marking the ones they have looked at already.

I didn't see anyone answer your 2005d question....anything after 2001 were never introduced into circulation by the mint
