Hunting for megalodon fossils near Venice, Florida

I am interested in hunting for megalodon fossils in and near Venice, FL, on land and in the Peace River. I don't want to go on a megalodon hunting tour with some group. I just want to go to some place, look around and see what I can find. I don't want to deal with asking private property owners' permission to search on their land, so private property is out of the question.

Would this be fairly easy to do in terms of:

1. Finding public land where I can do this
2. Finding places along the Peace River where I can just pull up and start looking
3. Avoiding fights with alligators and poisonous snakes in the Peace River

The last time I was down there you could find fossil shark teeth all day long on just about any stretch of beach. But they were mostly smaller ones, not the big megalodon teeth. We did find some small megalodon teeth in the Peace River, but that was with a guide. IMO you'll save yourself a lot of frustration hiring a guide rather than trying to guess a good spot, especially if you're not from the area. But you certainly can go without one if you prefer. You can rent a canoe in Arcadia and float the peace river at your leisure looking wherever you want to. Caspersen Beach & Englewood used to be good for little teeth but big megs are usually found farther offshore by divers. The Myakka River in Myakka State Park is loaded with sharks teeth and huge gators too!

A friend of mine worked construction in FL yrs ago. They ran a grader for a new road. After a good rain he walked the road and there were thousands of sharks teeth laying on the surface. They were all the smaller teeth. He had a bucket full of them.

I was gonna say the same thing… there’s a campground in Arcadia, they rent canoes, also to the public, you don’t have to camp there. Great place to see topless hippie chicks canoeing too.
