I have been out hunting a small area about 200 yards from my house. In between some cow pastures there is a little area with maybe 20-30 trees on it. I was thinking that this is some location where people might have been hiding some stuff. What I actually found was lots of trash - aluminum and such. But - amongst all the trash I found a shotshell butt. In general not very spectacular - you are right. BUT - this was a pinfire shotshell. In the early days when muzzleloaders became "out of style" weapons people were seeking for a faster way to reload and shoot. The idea of a cartridge was born. But how to set it off? The last generation muzzleloaders used percussion caps instead of flintlocks to set off the charge inside the barrel. Now these percussion caps/primers were located inside the cartridge butt and got hit by a firing pin which was placed right through the side of the cartrige butt. So the old style of hammer which was hitting the percussion cap before was still in place just hitting the firing pin now. It was a 16 cal. but what I find strange about it is that there are 2 hearts stamped on it. Does it mean were are shooting rabbits with love??? Or we love to eat them???

All I know is that the heart design was a very common motif in the 19th C, ie. maybe just decoration.

Many thanks for the explanation of the heart symbol. RWS is a Dynamite Nobel Brand and the factory was located in Troisdorf which ís just a 20 miles from where I live. R heinisch W estfaelische S prengstoffwerke

Cool and interesting find. Congrats!

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

many thanks for your replies.

I was so sad that we don't have detectable gold in my area but you guys on T-net have been leading me into the direction of hunting a "different" game!

I am very thankful for that input. I got me a Nox 800 and having so much fun since you won't believe it!!!!!!

My wife is sometimes not so happy as I am going out detecting a lot... but at the end of the day she always says "much better than going in a bar" and she is soo right....

It is alot of fun I love my nox also gotta be cool to find stuff on your own property Well done

I've always heard the Germans love their hasenfeffer. :icon_thumleft:

Great job Horst! The odds of finding this thing intact must be extreme. Don't mind the gold, few of us ever find it anyway. But you're consistently digging history and you can't beat that! We have centuries of history, you have millennia.

Best wishes!

These pinfire casings seem to be rare. Was it because of the expensive ammo or other reasons? :dontknow: Not that many to find out there.
From what was told me hunters liked pinfire shotguns because even in darkness you were able to feel if the weapon was loaded because of the sticking out pin.

Very interesting find. Quick ID. Congrats

I dig that Westfront! I knew an old timer who "felt" the trigger and blew a light switch out of the wall! No one ever let him live it down!

I've heard the Germans love their Urquell!
