Hunting...Young & Old Rivers

Well, the weekend has come to an end for me. I have had a great time with Dad out in the woods fighting the skeeters & briars. Found a lot of interesting stuff. I'll probably post other pics once I make it back home. I was hoping to find a button or a bullet while I was here. Got half of my wish anyway. I found an old .22 calibur bullet. Dad found the button! He'll probably post it later. I found a really old Mexican Spur, some kind of dagger or knife handle, lots of square nails, a really neat decorative floral piece, and lots of other miscellaneous items. It was really fun exploring through the woods. We even had an encounter with a herd of wild hogs tonight! It had to have been hilarious seeing me running across the pasture in white rubber boots hollering "Big Pig, Big Pig, Big Pig!!!" I'll tell you...you can really move when you want to! I had a great time and hate that I have to go back home tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get to come back before much longer and get out there again with him!

Re: Hunting...Young & Old Rivers

Proud you explained that about the nails. This I didn't know. I have found coins that date back to 1797, and one spanish real I don't know the date on that came from this place. Thanks.

Very cool finds! I always like digging any kind of relics!

Re: Hunting...Young & Old Rivers

Kind of wondering if I could have possibly found a button! Dad found some information on another site along with a photo that looks very similar to what I thought was a decorative floral piece. I'm including it here along with a better photo of the item that I found. Someone mentioned earlier that we may have an even older site mixed in with what has already been found. I've been trying to find out any information that I can. My curiosity has the better of me.

Quote..."The button found would have been from a coat or cape due to its size and shape. It would have been too elaborate for any commoner to have owned or worn, I was informed. The button was in the form of a double rose, being called a “Tudor Rose” for King Henry VIII’s family line (c1485-1603)."

Re: Hunting...Young & Old Rivers

Love to 'River hunt', nice finds.

Fossis..................

Re: Hunting...Young & Old Rivers

I think your mystery item is likely a bridle rosette.

1. It appears to have a lip around it, and the reverse of it appears to have been lead-filled at one time.

2. It is the right size and shape for a rosette.

3. It has a floral design (these designs were very popular for civilian rosettes).

Best Wishes,

Buckleboy

Old and Young river,

Square nails means a Fort was there IMHO. I would recommend the following;

Go find a book about camps, batteries and forts of Texas.

Find a fort between Dallas and Austin that is in the area of your site.

Buy some books that are accounts of the officers from your time period.

Go to your county seat and look for OLD SURVEY MAPS, the fort might be on it.

Go get a topographical map and compare the survey map to the topo map.

Review your findings on google map satellite.

I suspect that you are finding Navy buttons because they "held the fort down" for the Army guys or a detachment of Navy/Marines delivered supplys to this fort.

Is there a water supply near?

Is your site on top of a hill?

Do you see any trails?

Re: Hunting...Young & Old Rivers

The above pics are showing Second Seminole war forts in Florida 1836-1842, it should look close to this. Hope this helps.

Hope you find a militia plate and some more Texas buttons, one of the pics is a civil war Texas button the other is a Republic of Texas button.

The militia plate could be found at your site.

Please keep posting.

Re: Hunting...Young & Old Rivers

Wow! That's some really great stuff. Thank you so much for the info!

Re: Hunting...Young & Old Rivers

Well so to see you both had a wonderful day together, that's one thing about this hobby it brings family members together, at least sometimes. Most of the other half don't want to get their hands/shoes dirty, and just don't really understand this hobby; oh yes they do understand when you come home with some nice gold or silver rings and stuff from the beach (which disappear quickly to some unknown place). Great to read your hunting stories, and hope that you can get back to your dad and search soon. Good luck! Watch out for hogs too!

Re: Hunting...Young & Old Rivers

I think the hogs had better stay out of the way. They might get run over. Who said she couldn't run.

Re: Hunting...Young & Old Rivers

Re: Hunting...Young & Old Rivers

Old and Young River,

Anything new?

Re: Hunting...Young & Old Rivers

I had to make a trip hunting by myself a couple of days ago. I found a lot nails, and scrap iron, pieces of old pots, stoves, and farm tools that was broken. The best of my find was two fired bullets that I posted after the hunt. I haven't had a chance to go back since then. Young River will be down around Christmas, and maybe we will get a chance to make another hunt.
