I reccommend buying old broken cell phones to recycle. I have a buyer in FL that buys them by the pound. He wants a min of 20 pounds because he also pays the ship charge.

Every week I get for free or pay from 25-50 cents each for 4-5 phones. 100 phones weigh about 20 lbs. This last weekend was no different I picked up 5 for free at yardsales. But on Sunday I decided to go to a swapmeet that I had not been to in over a month. I stopped at every booth that had junk trying to buy phones and silver and brass/copper. I did OK but at one booth the guy said he had boxes of old cell phones at home. I told him what I wanted to pay and he agreed. This whole conversation was done via his daughter the interpreter.

So last night I drove to his house to make my buy. He was not exagerating on the amount of phones he had. I think I bought a bit less than half of what he had. I told him I will be back in a few weeks to buy more.

I now own 1000 broken cell phones  that are soon going on their last trip to Florida.

Would you mind sharing the contact info on your buyer and what he pays? PM it to me please if you don't want to post it. Thanks.

Ditto, as I am in S.Fl.

It could possibly be another way our Club here can make money for our charites. The club does not currently collect cell phones, (we do donate other items, pulltabs, etc) Maybe a new way for us to promote our community charity work. (Not trying to blow horn, but any ideas are appreciated and implemented when possible).
Thank you.

As long as it is OK with the mods I will post his info. His name is Jack and I think he started out like us, just recycling and built it into a small business.

He pays $4 a pound for cells (no batts) He asks a 20# min and he pays shipping charges. I sent him one batch a few months ago expecting about $80 but he said some of the phones were worth more if he resold them so he sent just under $100. Here is his URL http://relectrocycle.com/ He is in Ocala, FL.

Jack is also on a gold refining chat group I belong to.

Thanks a lot cyberdan, Good luck with all you undertakings.

I think I heard on one of those "end of the world" shows on Discovery that 1 ton of cellphones contain about 1 ounce of gold total. More copper and silver but I can't remember the totals.

The show depicted apocalyptic survivors rummaging through a garbage dump for cell phones to recycle.

Hey hombre, that makes me wonder why? In that, if you are in an apocolyptic situation of survival, you cannot eat gold, silver, etc........

I didn't see the show, but, I would be in the woods looking for food, not in a garbage dump looking for a cell phone! (Is it just me?)
If I wanted gold & silver, I'd bring my metal detector with me. ;D

And thanks again cyberdan.

seems everyone thinks gold and silver would be the big trading commodity in a post apocalyptic situation. I think it would be more like food, water and some sort of skill. that will be more likely to get u further in a world like that

I see where you are coming from. The part I saw where the surviving population is cell phone scavenging in a dump was set during the early "rebuilding" phase of society after the initial decline. It kind of reminded me of a feudal society like Europe in the Dark Ages. Many urban areas had been reclaimed for vegetable gardening at this point IIRC.

I'd be thinking, food, medicine, ammo, fuel of any kind & weapons would be the bartering items to have. Especially ammo. IMHO
