I can't believe I actually found this today!!

It's a civil war era martingale this one is rare and from what I've seen found mostly in Texas though mine I found in Louisiana!! I'm not sure what type the metal is but I think it's pewter. I'm trying to find more stuff out about it so any more info would be awsome!! Thanks for looking and hh!!

Firstly its silver plated copper-alloy (high copper content).

At this point I'm not convinced by the ID, which references were the others using?

I have found one of those here in Montana at an 1880s-1900s site. Neat find.

Any idea on function? I looked at this in the What Is It & the book reference doesn't ring true.

Someone tried to tell me it was horse-tack related, but I can't find the link I looked at. Other than that, I am unsure.

Basically a martingale is a set of straps that clip onto the girth and both sides of a saddle, meant to keep the saddle from sliding backwards on a horses back.

The three straps connect at the horses breast. Usually the connection point is a ring (2 inches plus or minus) and sometimes a more its more elaborate (decorative).

I know, but this pressed copper piece is not like any other (martingale) I have seen & why the loop?
