I tested the DepthMaster on my GC1023 and it doesn't work.

All I get is a barely audible signal.

I think one needs a threshold hum type of detector for this to be of any great help.

I'll try it again when I buy some more machines.

It will not work on my minelabs or Garretts just a low hum like you get............but it works on my DFX

Any other detectors you've tried it on?

I'm pretty sure it would work on a Nautilus.

well i gonna find out i have one on the way,i remember when those things came on the market, never thought i needed one, now just gonna try it on my compass 77pro.

maybe i can reach china m/b and get one of those 12 inch coils to fit our gc1023's

I can't wait to try one of those NEW 12-inch coils on my GC1023.

Merf has tested his 1023 with the 8" coil at 8 inches on a buried quarter. That's 2-inches deeper than my Tesoro DeLeon would do. The very best I could get with it on a freshly buried quarter was 6 inches.

I'm almost willing to bet the 1023 with the 12-inch coil would beat the Tejon fixed with the stock coil. It may even match the Explorer (in depth anyway).

Can't wait.

eeeewwwwww---you in trouble now M/B i promised merf i would not rat him out about his 1023, i accused him of using a stick one time so not to tell on him and now you spill the beans, and where did he get a 8inch coil, mine has the 6 on it. it will still hunt like crazy. :tard:

But you're right--I probably shouldn't post him like that. Oh well, it won't be the 1st time I blew it.

I think he's about ready to come out of the GC1023 closet (so ta speak). And too he's not the only other user besides you and me. Right now there's probably at least a dozen members here using it secretly. Things are changing fast in this hobby. The GC1023 is now being discussed openly on the other forums too.

All the GC1023 detectors made now have "8 inch waterproof search coil"

They just came out with a 12-inch.

WOW! The economy really stinks.

You're going to see more of this in the future. Even with the major brands.

Right now detector sales for the major makers are pretty decent but if the economy keeps in a nose dive we'll see lots of bargins out there.

If you offered them $49 they might just take it.

Thanks,

I told you what it would not work on my new Garretts & Minelabs but it works on my DFX........ When i got it i used it on my Garrett Freedom 2 Coin Commander..It worked fine on it

Yes, most likely it will work on machines with a threshold hum. Probably most new "silent search" machines would have trouble with it.

To me it doesn't make sense because basically the DepthMaster is a "hearing aid." And it was made to match all detectors using headphones (which are the same as far as matching the output jack).

But all I get with mine is a very faint signal almost too low to hear.

Maybe the problem is some machines take stereo plugs and some take mono plugs..

Bingo! I'll bet you're right.

I thought my adapter from 1/4 stereo to 1/8 stereo (the size of the detector's plug) was stereo but I just checked and it's mono.

This is most likely the problem.

The DepthMaster does work on my GC1023 metal detector.

The 1023 is one of those "silent search" machines so it has no threshold hum for weak signals. This is the way most detectors are made today. :'(

As we all know, "silent search" machines either hear a nice loud beep or nothing at all (sucks).

So, the DepthMaster really doesn't do all that much. I do like how it makes the detector sound (a little smoother). So, I'll use it but it doesn't really gain extra depth AS FAR AS I CAN TELL NOW.

In the instructions it says not to go by air tests and that's all I can do at this time of year.

But I can tell you this, I'd definitely use it on a threshold hum machine. It really does increase the signal volume but it does so in a smooth pleasant way.

I had one(the box unit) on a Whites in the early 90's. It definitely helped me find some weak signals on some deep coins: wish I had one now.

Well this post is from 2009 but still very interesting...........To read..........

That particular model of Depthmaster is what I used on all my Fisher 1200 series detectors and it worked great. It amplifies weak signals and keeps large surface targets from blowing your headphones off your head.
The Depthmaster Plus had and external volume control on it and worked great on Tesoro detectors with no volume control. I used a Depthmaster Plus on my Silver µmax and was amazed at how much further a target could be heard
in air tests. I honestly think the Depthmaster will give better results than going to a larger than stock coil. The Depthmaster wasn't powered up until you plugged your headphones into it. I remember getting my first Depthmaster for my 1260x
in the early to mid 80's. Detector Electronics also came out with the same circuitry built into a set of comfortable headphones with a switch to turn the Depthmaster off and on in the late 80's or early 90's. They worked exactly like the original except
the circuitry was in the headphones and not in the small box that had to be velcroed to the detector housing. I still have my orginal Depthmaster Superphones and they still sound great after all these years.

Depthmasters are getting harder to find since they are no longer made, but if you get a chance to buy one jump on it. You can call Detector Electronics and ask them what Depthmaster will work on what detector. This is the best way to make sure the Depthmaster will work on your detector. The Depthmasters work and work well and can be bought for 30 to 40 bucks if you can find one. Ask any of the oldtimers here that have used one and they will tell you the same thing... they work.
