"i fought a huge toad monster for a 140 year old silver [french]" True lol

Hi all, Today i went to a place known as The Napoleon Reef.Gold was found here in 1868 by french diggers and i assume thats how the quartz reef got its name.Lots of regrowth here and seems untouched since the rush days.I got a faint sound deep under a washed out bank and started to dig down.Lots of roots and was quite damp.At about 9 inches something moved. ??? ??? ??? carefully dug the hole out and i found a big fat ground toad.I put him in a container until i dug the target i was trying to find. The coin found was a french silver from 1866. ;D ;D ;D.The french built most of the bridges over the creek here after the gold rush and i will post some pics of them later on.Heres pics of my ugly fat find and silver coin and the hole and site. Never know what i will dig up next, may be even treasure. ;D ;D ;D

uh if I remember correctly that type of toad is quite poisionous folks-- don't think you want to "pucker" up on him at all -- or even handle him too much --- he oozes a rather toxic slime that can kill anything that tries to eat him and they get quite large to boot ---they came to aussie land via a botched govt "experiment" where they were brought in to "control" another pest--- but sadly the govt did not account for their breeding and non eatiblity by the local preditors ---their kind of a pain in the rear to most aussies --- If memory serves me right--- Ivan

Yea, we call them Bufo toads. I dont know the real name but we have them here in Florida as well. They are non-native, get quite large, like to eat dogfood if left out, are poisonous if a dog tries to bite one, can breed in any wet spot it seems, they hang around outside my door and are generally considered a pest.. I dont know if thats a Bufo but could be.

Nice find.
I caught a little Bufo outside my door tonight. He hangs around the light eating bugs. This little guy has some personality. Likes to chirp like a bird. I decided to keep this one. My animals dont even look at them anymore.. I usually throw them over the fence into my neighbors yard. Bad nite pic.

Great find. Nice looking cane toad. Looks like a lot of digging for a toad find. Give it a kiss and it might turn into a nugget.

What kind of toad is it?

Re: "i fought a huge toad monster for a 140 year old silver [french]" True lol

I think you already found a bit of treasure. The French silver coins in my 6-pound book are organized by year. For 1866, they have a 1-Franc coin that's worth $350. The 2-Franc says $650.

Those figures are in a column called "Mkt Val". I haven't read any prefatory stuff in the book about grading and such, but I'd say your coin is a Keeper, wot?

Common burrowing toad [native] Neobatrachus or related to Limnodynastes. there's quite a few toads in these 2 families. When i get more time will get the exact one.

the cane toad looks quite like your toad -- heard you also were having problem with "cane toads" them over there and since they look quite a bit alike --it was a easy "mistake" to make ---both are large and homely critters --we have "cane toads" here in south florida sadly --- their a non native nasty buggers and very poisonious esp to dogs --since they are fond of dog kibble it seems ---if old rover bites or tries to eat one in defense of his food --it could easily kill him---they grow quite lage and eat just about anything they can choke down esp --other "helpful" type frogs and toads --they seem to know their highly toxic and thus are basically are afraid of nothing--- Ivan

You can almost make pets out of them. The large ones will leave poop all over your porch...nasty. Tinpans toad does kinda look like one.

Re: "i fought a huge toad monster for a 140 year old silver [french]" True lol

nah you can make pets out of em --heck I don't like em---- they wipe out all the "nice" frogs and native type toads out of a area rather quickly ---frogs are natures big time bug eaters but those jerk "cane frogs" instead they eat all the other frogs and toads and aren't very good at getting rid of bugs like the others types are --- Ivan

were imported into Oz from Hawaii :o

- not that I want to stir the pot 8)
