I found a great new place to hunt in today. It's a 100' foot X 50' foot island out in the middle of the street. It's surrounded by houses that look like they were built in the 1930's. Within the first hour I dug out 2 clad Kennedy half dollars which was kind of weird, they were 20 feet apart.

After about 2 hours I dug something that really surprised me. At 4 inches in depth out pops a 1935-S walking liberty half dollar! Another hour of hunting goes by before I dig a silver dime, it was a 1954-S Roosevelt. About 15 minutes after the silver dime one of the guys that live in one of the houses near the island tells me that I have to stop digging and that I have to leave. He was a big Italian guy with a New York accent, so I did not argue with him. :tongue3: He looked like one of the Sopranos:laughing7:!

I was almost done with the island anyway, I covered it pretty well for 3 hours of hunting digging out 43 coins. Walking liberty half dollars a hard to find. Since starting this madness I've dug 22 now.

Great finds! We have a few smaller islands like that around here, and I've considered hitting them. How is the trash? I would think there would be a ton of trash.

The amount of trash was not bad, a few aluminum screw caps, some pulltabs, brass fittings, copper wire, aluminum foil. Overall it was not bad, more coins than trash. I've hunted about 25 of these islands and about 60% had silver in them. Try to find the ones in the older neighborhoods. Good luck... CHF.

Congrats on scoring the goods before getting the boot!

Good thing you left when you did-otherwise some other guy with a metal detector might have dug you up someday!

My standard response to someone bichin about me hunting an easement: F off! try it, works every time!

Nice job on that big silver Cool Hand Fluke :icon_thumright: Seems like a spot worth hitting again, perhaps early morning like others mentioned. If he comes back, just say "Thank you for your concern, but I checked and I'm allowed to be here"

Oh I wish I were with you when that (expletive) New York (expletive) came out to talk (expletive). I would have told him I would cram my metal detector up his (expletive) so deep that I would have to hold him by his feet and detect with his fat (expletive) head.

Nice digs!

I have no doubt about this. :laughing7: I actually laughed reading this because I can only imagine how the back and fourth would have gone. I'd actually pay to watch that comedy show.

In this day and age? No, I'm sorry. Not the way nor the reason I want to be reported on the daily news. There is ABSOLUTELY nothing I can find in ANY ground worth taking that chance nowadays! I will stand my ground when I am right. Period. BUT....some things are just not worth that decision. IMHO, of course.

Nice finds!

Did you ask him what brand detector he uses?

He probably seen all the pictures being taken an knew something good was going on! Tomorrow he'll be swinging out there!

That is what we would call being on the wrong end of a metal detector, ha ha.

When I was a teen - I thought that tree belts - what we call them even if trees are gone - grass between side walk and road -
would be a good place to hit - especially in real old neighborhoods - up here - the town usually owns this land along with islands and medians
usually making them public
up here and states where it snows - anything dropped in the snow on the side walk will get shoveled or plowed onto these bits of land
I found I think 3 halves on tree belts and many coins along with keys and a few pieces of jewelry
I must mention my grandfather was hitting a tree belt in a high class neighborhood and guy came out with a large garden shovel and threatened to bash his head in if he did not leave
my grandfather would use a steak knife to cut small perfect plugs so as not to po anyone - he was like in his 80s and a frail man at the time
and this monster threatened him - I almost went there myself to see if he would've been so "brave" with me
my grandfather just moved on to another area

good to sometimes tell or ask police that you are going to hit there and see if they have a prob - I have told them sometimes I'm looking for a lost item
(white lie)
and have never gotten a negative response from them - many stop back to see how I did
one time they laughed thinking I was just finding new change - when they returned I had all kinds of silver - buffalos - IH pennies and a huge gold ring
their mouths dropped open

Nice finds CHF! I'd go to the Township (or whatever) office and ask about that island (since you've already dug it). If they give you permission, the Good fella can take a hike.

Ayy Tony! I gotta cannoli for you right here!

Thanks goomba, you can hunt my whole street...

You should have said, "Are you talkin' to me?" Italian guys always think that's funny. Try it some time! LOL!
