I have never had much luck with tear-outs in the past but I got lucky this time. I was reluctant to even try with the poor results in the past but 3 wheat pennies in 5 minutes kept me there digging. After my 6th or 7th wheat, Buffalo and a token I kept thinking there has got to be a silver here. Practically the next signal was the 1941 Mercury dime. It was getting dark and I was going to head out but figured I would go just a little bit longer. Then right along the edge of the tear out I got a very nice 33-35 signal on my Equinox 800. I thought man that sounds like a half dollar but figured it was the proverbial aluminum can. I decided I better be careful and about 4 inches down a half dollar in fact pops out. It was pretty dark at this point and between the corrosion and poor light I thought it was a clad half. I couldn’t believe it, how could a clad half get there. Then I rubbed the reeded edge and saw it, Silver! I have found 2 Barber halves in my 7 year career of digging but wanted a Walking Liberty so bad. I turned my phone light on and could see enough to confirm that’s exactly what it was, finally. I have seen 3-4 come out of the ground for other people but now at last it was my turn. Got it cleaned up a bit at home and saw the date 1942, my grandparents wedding year during the war before my grandfather shipped out. Cool year to find for me and finally got my Walking Liberty half. Buried under a street/sidewalk area didn’t do it any favors corrosion wise but I am happy with her!
