I was out metal detecting a couple of weeks ago and after digging a rather deep hole to locate something I happened across this piece. It was about ~6 inches down in a dried up creek bed (that still gets water through it from time to time).

I was hoping someone would know what creature it might've come from. Or if someone knows of a better place to post this, please let me know, I wasn't sure if this forum was right or not.

Any information appreciated, thanks!

It's an artiodactyl atlas. Looks bovid, but without better dimensions, it fits somewhere between cow and sheep.

Thank you very much for the information!

Looked at some pictures and it appears you are most definitely correct, a very nice eye you have. I'm very happy to know what it is, I had been wondering about it since I pulled it out of the ground.

Edit: I found this fox atlas on google images that has some striking similarities, perhaps mine belonged to a fox
