Is the rock part of the tube, or just stuck to it with rust and crud? Without the rock, it looks like a pipe coupler.

The Rock might be solder that has sweated into the pipe put some heat to it and see if it melts.

Sort of reminds me of something that the name of escapes me. But I'll give an example.
Like how a some ratchets have a spring loaded bearing that allows the socket to lock in place.
