I Got Screwed! I Got Nailed! Rosies Were Rockin' At the Soccer Complex!

YEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!

What a fantastic day! The weather here has been glorious the past three days. Unfortunately I had a long list of "honey do's" that I had to attend to the first two days I had off. Today however was ALL MINE! And what would any diehard metal detector fool like me do with a beautiful day and free time? But of course, I went metal detecting!
With the weather so nice today as well as the past two days, I knew that the parks would be packed with little kiddies, mom's, baby sitters, nannies or whoever.. so I went to one of my backup venues.
Blue skies, nary a cloud to be found, light breezes and temperatures in the 70's, Today was MADE for detecting! And it was especially nice at the Soccer Complex in the next town over from my home. I've always had good luck at this site, and it's so huge that I don't think I'll ever have to worry about it being "worked out". Especially since it's a popular park and it gets replenished every spring and summer, and fall. With that in mind and knowing that I've not bothered with the parking lots, much, in the past, I thought I would hit the gravel first today. Now I know that there aren't many of you out there that would choose to detect in gravel, at least as a first choice, but I think it's highly underrated. I've almost always had good luck in the rocks.

Of course I don't "dig" much in the gravel, just the first inch or so if need be, but most of the time the finds are on the surface or just dusted over. It seems the rosies love the rocks.. dimes that is, not necessarily silver, but even clad dimes are rosies, right? Rosies and pennies abound in the gravel, though not so many nickels or quarters. LOTS AND LOTS OF PULL TABS too. And a sprinkling of other bits of metal like SCREWS! and NAILS! But besides the junk there were coins, lots and lots of coins. Eventually though, I ran out of parking lot and reverted back to the grass, and digging for coins. I started on one end of the complex furthest from the concession stand/bathroom building seen in the first pic, and near the second shelter seen here.

you can see the line of fence posts in the distance here, I did a lot of walking today as well as detecting. I'm sure my doctor would approve, though perhaps not so much the sunburn that I am now suffering from as a result to being out all afternoon in the sunshine.. with no sun screen on. I pretty much stuck to the sidelines and ends of the soccer pitches where parents and other spectators might sit while watching the soccer matches.
This park has been in operation for some time now, how long I'm not exactly sure, but long enough that a lot of clad coins are now four to six inches deep under the grass. I found a lot of 70's clad today, along with more recent dates. I found some coins on or near the surface, but not many. Most of the stuff I found today was under the sod or several inches down in the dirt. And I found a BUNCH! I also found a lot of stuff on the surface that wasn't exactly metal, straps (elastic and velcro), some lighters (that still work), some pencils and pens, a neat "conversation" wrist band.

I found bottle caps (plastic "Coke Rewards".. that my wife enters on line), pull tabs, pull tabs, pull tabs.. can slaw.. LOTS AND LOTS OF buried soda and beer cans!!!???!!!???!! It still amazes me how many cans I find buried under the grass.. HOW DO THEY GET THERE??? I mean, doesn't ANYONE bother to pick these things up and dispose of them? Apparently not. Anyway, I *did* dispose of the ones I found. Being the "straight shooter" that I am you know. Oh and then I found this Straight Shooter..

I found a couple of rings today.. one was a bubblegum machine plastic junk "heart" ring, the other a metal bubblegum machine junk ring.

Did I mention the pull tabs? Oh and there was this odd looking loop thing that was just under the grass. At first I thought it was plastic, but my detector assured me it at least had SOME metal in it as well. I don't know if it's a piece of trim off of some car or truck or it is some sort of antenna or something. And then there was the thermometer! Yes, a thermometer, and it still works, though it went into the trash after these pictures were taken. Ok ok ok, not the trash, the recycling bin, along with the other bits of scrap metal with the exception of the pull tabs, they have their own special bucket. Eventually I'll fill that bucket up and I'll take it to the recycling center as scrap aluminum. Maybey they will be worth something.. at least make it worth my while to dig them up and save them. Here's hoping.
I found so many coins and other things today that I had to take two pictures of "Everything" This first is all the coins and some of the other stuff.. $10.66 US and one Canadian Penny..

And here is the rest of the stuff..

My wife suggested I let her take a picture of the back of my neck and my face to show my sunburn (no, it's not hurting.. yet..) but I didn't think that would be very entertaining.. at least not for me. <blushing> Still though, a little "burn" isn't so much to pay for such a wonderful day enjoying this hobby. And that I did.. ENJOY! I hope the rest of you got out today or will get out soon and enjoy the weather and the hobby too.

As always.. Happy Hunting Everyone !

Hey Frodov, nice batch of change...any day over 10 bucks is a GREAT day. I knew you were just dreaming when you said you got screwed & nailed. LOL

Well, maybe not dreaming.. could have been a nightmare for someone who found one of those nasty little spikes in their tire. Oh well, no mor harm will come from them, they have been recycled away to become someone else's soda can or pull tab.. to be found by myself or another metal detectorist in the future. <grin> You know, the whole circle of life thing. <grin>

Thanks!

Happy Hunting !!

I always really enjoy your adventures and the way there illustrated. Neat finds and the money is always nice. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Tim. Everyone keeps telling me I need to write a book or something. <blushing> I don't know about that, but I do enjoy relating my "adventures" in metal detecting to/with others. If how I describe and relate my stories to everyone is entertaining, all the better! <smile> Maybe I will write a book or something... hmmmm.. wonder if there's any money in stories of a novice metal detector?

Happy Hunting!
