Hello,

Back in tha late 60’s, my brother and friends would ride
motorcycles in tha windy roads NW of Little Rock. One
thing we really liked doing was crossin tha Arkie River on
tha Toad Suck Ferry.

Tha last time I was at Toad Suck was when my brother
got married on tha ferry as it was crossing tha river. That
was tha year thay took tha ferry out of service.

Here is me and my brother at tha wedding reception in
Huckabe’s grocery store.

I’m tha good looking one, on tha left.

The Corp of Engineers channeled tha river and thay put
a bridge over tha river with a lock and dam.

Today I decided at go back up to Toad Suck.

Why thay put that big anchor there I don’t know. It
would have sunk tha ferry.

I remembered several places that I always wanted at
metal detect. I ran into problems right off. Tha ferry
landing was completely gone. Every where on tha North
side of tha river was completely re-graded, or posted.
I couldn’t find any land owners around either.

Here’s what tha ferry site looks like now.

On tha South side of tha river I found where tha old road
came down to tha river.

Tha only place I could hunt was tha woods on tha left
of tha road in tha photo. Everything else had been
regarded.

It was hard ta get any signals. Tha trees had been killed
off and replaced with pine trees. Tha ground is sandy.
After all tha activity and tha floor of tha forest built up to
tha point that everything was just too deep. I found an
old road and an old home site. But few targets. Just big
trash left by loggers.

I was runnin out of good options.

There was not much time left, so I decided at hit a small
tot lot at tha park.

There I found a little joy. lol

Not much at take home. But hay! It was a nice day. And
now I’m re-acquainted with tha Toad Suck.

I saw several places that could be good sites on my trip.

If I get back up thar, I’ll try again.

Thanks for lOOkin and

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

You should have panned for gold. The Ozark Chapter of the GPAA have several outings at Toad Suck every year and do find some fine gold.
Ozark Chptr Newsletter

October Newsletter

We had a nice outing at Toad Suck. No rain this time. There were
eight members at the meeting; though several more were there to
prospect. We had a total of $1097.61 in our treasury.

We are going to have our next meeting at Twin Creek Recreational Area
at Bear Mountain Crystal Mine, located 7 miles East of Mt. Ida. Fees
are $20 for adults, $10 for children 7-11, 7 & under free with paying
adult for each night to camp with 2 families per camp site. Twin
Creek is located 28 miles west of Hot Springs on 270 or 7 miles east
of Mt. Ida on 270E.

Information you may need to know: "To dig in our mines, you must go
the rock shop and sign a release form and pay your fees. They will
give you detailed directions and instructions about the mines. It is
a primitive area which makes it more exciting so be sure to bring or
wear old clothes as the red dirt is hard to get out. Gloves and
sturdy shoes a must. Boxes or buckets to carry your treasures home
with you. Bring your own digging tools or they can be purchased at
the rock shop."

NEW BUSINESS

Tony purchased 3.2 grams of gold and dispersed it into 20
bags of dirt for the club. We paid Tony $75 for the purchase. The
club bought a 9 gram gold nugget from Pat Barnhill for our next $5
raffle. Jim welcomed our 2 newest members- Tom and Barbra Larkin.
They are excited to be joining us. Barbara is a metal detector
enthusiast and spent the whole day Saturday detecting on the beach.
Jim dug a hole about 4 feet deep and collected some good black sand.
Others spent the day visiting, fishing and four-wheeling. We couldn't
have asked for a better weekend.

DONATIONS

Tom and Barbara Larkin –collector's bock, sleeping bag, grill utensil
set, and a large silver nugget.

Rodney Grotts-1st Aid Kit

Dwight McDonald-camp chair

Jim and Jean Bagwell-marshmallow forks and a spin seat

We held a small $1 raffle and Allen won most of the items. We were
able to draw for the Gold Buddy Jr. and Wayne Hale won it. We also
started selling tickets for the 9 gram gold nugget. We took in
$236.00 from the raffle and store sales. We had a good potluck with
hamburgers, homemade chili (by Barbara Larkin) and Allen's famous
peach cobbler.

Directions:

From Fort Smith take exit 12 East towards Texarkana. Follow Hwy 71 to
the Hwy 270 turn off. Turn left toward Silver (7 miles east of Mt.
Ida). Once in Silver go 7/10 (seven-tenths) of a mile to Twin Creek
Rd from Hwy 270 go 1.5 miles to the lake.
