when one coin rolls you get say 10 bucks worth (a roll of halves) find the 2 40% silver halfs at $1 dollar face value IN THE ROLL--you replace them with PLAIN OLD CLAD HALVES ($1 FACE VALUE) THEN YOU RETURN THE $10 ROLL OF HALVES TO A DIFFERANT BANK -- TOTAL INVESTED IS $1 --FOR 2 40% SILVER HALFS ( WHICH ARE WORTH MUCH MORE THAN $1 DUE TO SILVER VALUE) -- PLUS THE 2 HALFS WILL ALWAYS BE WORTH THE $1 THATS "INVESTED" IN THEM AT FACE VALUE ALONE ( THUS THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY TO LOSE ANY "INVESTED" MONEY ) - EVEN IF THERE ARE "0" SILVER HALVES IN THE ROLL * IT STILL WORTH THE $10 YOU USED TO TRY YOUR LUCK --SO THERE IS "NO FISCAL LOSS"

THINK OF IT LIKE BUYING "SCRATCH OFF LOTTO TICKETS " WHERE YOU MIGHT GET A BIG WINNER EVERY NOW AND THEN BUT AT THE VERY LEAST YOU GET YOUR MONEY BACK EVERYTIME . -- ITS LIKE NO LOSE GAMBLING , WITH A CHANCE OF WINNING TO BOOT.
Roll hunt much? For example, the last 3 times I've been out, I've gone through $580 in halves, close to $3k in dimes, and brought home 3 silver dimes. I spent roughly $20 in gas for a return of about $7 in silver. We see many great scores on here, but there are lot's of us that never get that jackpot lotto. So, yes, some of us do lose money.

hey guys could you quit picking on ebeg1234. who cares if he has 29 posts at one time or another we all had 29 posts.

+ Trillion

Some folks equate quantity of posts with knowledge or credibility. Just because you contribute massive quantities of banal posts doesn't make you knowledgeable or creditable. Just sayin

I've been here since Aug 12th, but I don't post a lot. :icon_thumright:

Thats even worse because forums need contributors, not lurkers.

Personally I just don't get it, unless you have some serious capital. But then again if you have 200,000 in cents that only equates to $2,000 and even if you sell them for $4,000 the amount of time and energy that is spent just doesn't make sense to me. The thing I don't get is that if more and more people start doing this, and if the gov't lifts the ban, the places that melt could basically set their own prices.

Think about it, if you have 200,000 in cents and you want 2x face for them, what is to stop the guy the next block over from selling his 200,000 for 1.5x face and so on and so on. Not saying there isn't some money to be made, but just seems like a lot of time, effort and money for a minimal reward at best. But that just my 1.3 - 2 cents.

If you don't get it, then don't do it. But for some of us, it makes sense. And that's fine with me. I don't buy boxes of halves any more. Becuase in Phoenix the ratios are too low (1 silver per 8.6 boxes of halves this year so far. Yep, pretty dismal!!) So for me it's not worth it. Fo ryou maybe it is. Absoutely fine. :-) And for me, I hve sold a LOt of cents for 1.6 cents each. You think that's not worth it. But, I can cull 1,300 coppers per hour, and that adds up. PLus I get get wheats, indian heads (rarely) and the thrill of the hunt. HJey, when I play golf it costs me an average of $55 per day. EVERY time. So to do something I enjoy and get paid "only a little"? WONDERFUL. :-) better than paying to play.

Take 1,300 per hour, and that's not bad. And that takes into consideration the time to buiy, dump, and unwrap too. All my hours, divided by the amount of coppers I get. Add the 2,000 + wheats per year (Not per hor or day or week or month) and I'm HAPPY with the returns. :-)

See? to each his own. To some it is worth it, and to some it is not. But then again ... some people like ice skating in the olympics too. So you can never tell about people. :D

I totally agree! That's the basic law of supply and demand. Yeah, copper cents are worth $.02 at the moment, but when the ban gets lifted the supply to the market will increase so much that price will most likely be cut by a third if not more. That copper cent may end up being worth only "one cent" again, not including numismatic value. Also, any amount melted over $600 these days must be recorded as income and you will be taxed on it. Is it worth it then? you would need a huge amount of coinage for this to be even remotely worth it.

I'm not knocking it. You've got a system and someone to sell to. You can score a few extra bucks a week, nothing at all wrong with that. What I don't get is the hording of hundreds of thousands of cents for only a couple thousand dollars of profit at best. As a hobby to score a few extra bucks I think it's great. But it seems that some think it could be a full time job, and thats just insane, in my opinion. But like you said, to each his own. Again not knocking it or you. Rock on and sell what you can.

even though many are learning about crh...its still a very small percent, how many out of a hundred do you think know, or even care about crh? i would say less than 1% plenty of silver still out there!! (or at least out there on the east coast...)

That's the beauty of it. Unlike circulated Ag, there is a huge amount available with minimal effort once you have the equipment. All you have to do is take it. I can take as much as I want as often as I want.

I am averaging .6 90% halves and 2.5 40% per box. My banks are all within 7 miles, and I time pickups/dumps with work/errands. I think it depends on your area but good planning helps. In my area customer rolls have been a bust but boxes of halves have not, so I focus on the boxes. Like any hobby you have to be smart about it or you will start spending too much.

"I hate Yahoo!!!"

It was on "Nightline" as well. So hate them too.

I've always seen CRH'ing divided into 2 camps. Camp1 are the people who do it as a hobby. Camp2 are the people who do it to make money. I'm in camp1. I've been hand sorting cents and CWR halves since 2007. For me it is relaxing and I enjoy the thrill of the hunt. As for doing CRH'ing to make money the time spent just doesn't make sense (to me) when boiled down to an hourly wage.

I thought I'd post something because it seems just lurking is a bad thing!

As I have stated before I buy silver with my copper and get the silver for half price. :headbang:

there is so much competition in my area and silver is few and far between
and all the tellers know to look for silver :BangHead:
the newbies wont recognize proofs and I have found several

EXACTLY!!!!! If I was simply accumulating silver it would be more efficient to get a part time job and use the proceeds to buy eagles. Over the long run when you account for wear and tear, shorts and - YOUR TIME (sorry) you are lucky to make fifty cents an hour.

Remember this. I have been CRH for over 10 years now and EVERYONE has dry times. You may be doing fine for months and then just like that you don't find crap for months. So if you think you can make money you are correct but to make it a living, Get real!!!! It ain't gonna happen! Keep the dream CRH for the fun!!!! :icon_sunny: :icon_sunny:

I saw a copper culling video on TV IN THE BANK AS I WAS PICKING UP MY BOXES.

It ain't a secret anymore. It's just there for those with the guts to do it.

Keep on Rollin !

I actually think I'm going to start culling copper. I've done it before, just not for a while. Might as well do it while there's a ton out there still.
