I have 10 boxes of pennies coming Wednesday and I'm really excited!

I just started doing this last week and I'm completely hooked. I got $300 in dimes, $40 in nickels, and $10 in pennies. I liked going through pennies the best, so I got a box a couple days later, then 2 more on Friday (which I went through in a day!)

I can't WAIT until Wednesday. I'm stuck here at home with nothing to do, and no banks are open today or tomorrow so I have no way to get more pennies :O

I'm just making this topic because I have to talk about pennies! I go through each box penny by penny, sorting them by date into cups. After I get done, I check all of my wheat pennies thoroughly under my microscope, put the best pennies in my album, put the copper in a box, then roll up the rest to go back to the bank.

My first box I found:
1942
1942-D
1946
1950-D
1953
1953-D
1956-D
1957-D
1958-D (x2)

My second box I found:
1935
1942-D
1944
1944-D
1945 (x2)
1947
1951-D
1953-D
1955-D
1956-D
1958-D (x2)

My third box I found:
1942
1946-S
1948-D
1950-D (x2)
1951-D
1952-D (x2)
1953-D
1953-D (shiny)
1955-D
1956-D
1957-D
1957-D (shiny)
1958-D

In my hunt I found this 1955:

I bought a Dansco album after the first box and have it filled up pretty nicely at this point!

I'm sure there are some other exclusive penny sorters here too, what awesome things have you found?

Guys I have it so bad that I'm scouring all over my entire house looking for loose change to sort.

I am averaging 10-12 wheats per box, but my best box contained 88 wheat pennies, all 1940-1958.

Great topics, I'm gonna enjoy looking these over, thanks BuffaloBoy!

Welcome to the penny club! I love love love pennies and I can only dream about getting 10 boxes at one time. Did you get them all from one bank?

If you're just starting out or want a way to keep track of your finds, I log all my finds extensively and my spreadsheet in Excel is set up like this:

Nice spreadsheet, I actually do something similar for pennies/nickels/dimes

Anyway, yeah they are all from the same bank, 5/3 bank, and I have an account. I called them last week and asked how many boxes I could order, and she said it doesn't really matter, so I asked if I could do 10 and she said that was completely fine! I'm gonna go through them and then probably order 10 per week for a while.

be careful ordering so many boxes at once, you'll wear out your welcome very quick... literally.

I opened my account with that teller when I was 14 (joint account with my mom). I'm 27 now and still go to the same bank. She seems pretty alright with it, but I think you raise a good point. I think when I pick them up I'll straight up ask if it will be a problem down the line, and see how many I can get on a weekly basis without overdoing it.

A little update, I found a bank that was open (charter one, in a Kroger). I got all the pennies they could spare....$12 worth. Found just 4 wheats (1944,1945,1946-D,1956-D), but I also found a few pennies that looked like proofs. Got lots of upgrades for the dansco album!

Yes I think 10 is too many. Even if its completely ok with your teller, it could attract attention from higher up. Line up some more pick up and dump banks and you can probably do 10/week no problem. Spread over several banks I mean. Good luck.

Don't bother asking. Quick story...first time I ordered a box of halfs I asked the dump bank if it was ok to use the counter. They said no problem. Then when I brought them to dump I asked again...no problem...as I dumped them and the teller helped me I said, I don't need to dump them all...no problem..dump away. Then the next week I go to pickup bank and the dump bank has called them and asked them to tell me not to bring any more coins. I was livid. I went to the dump bank and spoke to the manager and let them know that was childish and rude. So now I dump rolled coins there and make them count them.

You told them where you got them? I am honest with my banks about what I am doing when pressed but I don't volunteer anything and try to give the least information I can when they ask questions. Honesty has definitely gotten me cut off before but when that happens it does feel really good to come back and dump on a former supply bank. I sometimes wonder if they regret cutting me off. Lol

lol seriously? I had to read this a few times to make sure you actually put those two sentances together lol

When they ask me, I just tell them that I'm trying to fill up a book with cents for my son (which is who the book is for...when he's older. He's only 9 months old now!)

you have a copper sorter i hope for them cents?

No way that would take the fun right out of it. I love just putting on a tv show and sitting down with a box and sorting through each one by hand. Gotta make sure I don't miss anything.

I usually do nickels. 6 boxes a week, but picked up from 4 different banks. Seems to work better for everyone if they don't have to make several trips to the vault and back with my coin. Got to keep them happy.
