I recently have been detecting, but thought you may be a little sick of my rusty crusty's. (Have no fear, I took pictures of today's ;)) I hit a field today where a 1800's farm used to be. I only had an hour, found some neat old relics, a corn cutter thingy, an old bushing, half a horse shoe (my favorite field find), few other junky pieces. Well An hour and a half later had to go before my Hubby sent out the calvery :D.

Came home fed the working boys, just had to play a little more, so I hit the yard. Yup got a few nails, a 1980 dime, then.............I started to dig a hole and here comes my treasure seeking dog to help me dig the hole ::), she has never showed interest in helping me dig before, so together we dug a STANDING LIBERTY quarter!!!! It's real worn, but it's my very first silver coin find, what a rush! I was jumping and screaming I did it, I did it! :-[ To heck with it I was tickled pink! YEAH!

As far as I can figure it is 1917-1924, it does have the stars below the eagle and if it was recessed date I wold think you'd still be able to see it.

The pipe and perfume bottle cap came out of the crawl space under my 1870 home. I did not picture the rusty crusty nails and window latch, man there were allot of nails. Yup I crawled around in there with my vibra probe in the dirt ::). It was fun, what can I say, the guys opened it up and I am addicted, so crawl I did :D.

Man am I pumped!

P.S. Ty thought it appropriate we display the coin on the peach :D, kids!

Congratulations on your first silver. It is few and far between here in my part of the country, so I know the thrill. Now maybe you should change your name to Queen of silver or Silver Girl or something appropriate? I'm sure the quarter is just the first of many as you certainly are not afraid of going in after it. Re: I have been out, what a rush!

Did you jump around and scream like the commercial on TV?

"I found a quarter...I found a quarter".... ;D

Cool finds!! I have a quarter, but don't have a turtle/elephant pipe (I really like that best).

BTW, it's hard to find a nice SLQ. Most times the date is looong gone.

Congrats.

Re: I have been out, what a rush!

The clay pipe is really cool too, I agree, probably should have posted it earlier, was hoping for a few more crawl space finds first. I does say TRADE MARK on it, it was suggested the turtle and elephant were the trade mark? I am guessing it's from the early 1900's?

I will probably get shot for this but I hung the Ace 250 up and pulled out the Discovery 1100. Sat. I really got sick of digging false targets with the Ace, or it was just way off on pinpointing. I found every target Sun. with the 1100? I don't think I could EVER clean this yard of iron targets, it will keep me busy for years. I agree I'm not ironing the lawn either :D. I may stomp on the target though, see if the Hubby sends the guys with the white coats? ;)

I know most of you have felt this, but as soon as you see that silver in the hole you KNOW it's not clad and......what a feeling! :)

I sent an e-mail to the woman at the link Gypsy provided, here is what she had to say. I would buy all I could find for $10 a piecce :D and still consider it a steal.

Hello there

I have not seen this actual pipe before although I have seen pieces
similar with other animals. I would have said these tend to originate
from makers in northern Europe including England, France, Germany and
Holland although I am a little uncertain about the word Trade Mark in
countries other than England. In England the Patents, Designs and Trade
Mark act was passed in 1883 so I would think if the pipe originated from
a maker over here in England it dates from that time through to about
1920 when the industry was in huge decline. You would likely be safe
with a date of 1885 to 1900 with this pipe.
With those particular creatures I would be inclined to think the design
was made perhaps to celebrate perhaps the opening of a zoological garden
in Europe or even just because someone wanted a pipe with these animals
on for export for citizens who lived in a country where they were
symbolic of the country or even the name of a tavern or supply house.
I do know some USA makers produced pipes so it might be USA origin
although again I am not sure if Trade Marks were used in the USA, I know
Patents were. I think there is a pipe called the Boston Bean Company
with Trade Mark on it. Animal pipes also show up in Australia a lot,
often with Emu or exotic creatures on them... usually originating from
Europe although some made in Australia.
Value about $5

regards
Heather

Thanks for the help Gypsy!
Kim
