It is almost exactly 2 inches long and 1/2 inch at the widest point

It has 7 lines I believe for rotation out of the barrel. Shenkle artillery has 7 lines but they much larger in size from what I can see.
Maybe an Archer design

.50 Browning Machine Gun, Armor Piercing Incendiary Tracer, or APIT. Copper jacket, actually gilding metal but copper will do, steel core, incendiary compound in between, tracer compound in the base. Look up a cross sectional diagram for a better understanding if needed. Used in aircraft and vehicle mount guns, belt fed.

50 Caliber Browning Machine Gun, Armor piercing round. The inside piece (core) is Tungsten Carbide so hardly ever any damage.
If it were APIT or Tracer it would not have boat tail rear end.
