hi all,
So today i went to a new permission that is my detecting buddies but we have done a bit of a permission swap and now go to each others when you please. The site i was searching today has history dating back well into the saxon era and a saxon hoard of coins was found there a few years back! It was also owned by a very wealthy family for at least 10 generations so there is plenty of history on the land.

Last weekend i searched there for the first time and managed to find a few coins and a George iii bullhead silver sixpence which is a coin that i had been hoping to find for the last 5 years. I decided today that i would focus on the same area that it came up from but this time take a very low and slow approach with the Minelab safari.

First signal was a worn silver which is unidentifiable, second up was a silver and the third and fourth and so on.....

This is the first hoard i have ever found and all were found within a 2 foot radius of the first coin.

I used the Minelab safari set in custom mode of just audible threshold, all metal with -10 and +40 notched and auto sensitivity.

I hope you enjoy the video and of me uncovering my first silver coin hoard :)

That is awesome! A hoard! Congrats!

Thanks for the kind comments everyone :) things have progressed today. I have had another two sixpences and also from around 18 inches down a silver drinking vessel !

Yup; was distracted!. Excellent finds. George was buff!

Haha he sure was and that is the reason his coins got the nickname "bullhead" lol

Depending on the size the worn silver is probably a shilling. A pretty common find, often they are counter-stamped with various letters or shapes.

Its a great find & not one that I've repeated but its not technically a Hoard, yet. A hoard was deliberately buried, normally in some kind of container. What you have is either a coin spill, or maybe a small purse loss.

Hi crusader thanks for that.
I'm getting a bit confused on the treasure law and I was wondering if you could clarify as I have never had finds like this before. Is this a treasure case because there are more than one silver coin or does it not apply to coins over 300 years?

Cheers in advance

No its not, because its not over 300 years old.

Ok cheers for that, does the same apply for 2 or more gold coins from the same hole if they are not 300 years old?

Great Finds!
Those coins are ALL in superb shape!

Lets just clarify this, with coins you need ''2 or more Gold or Silver in close proximity that are over 300 years old'' to be declarable under the terms of the Treasure Act. However, it then gets a bit confusing, because I know of a case of circa WWI era gold Sovereigns (lots) found, I think in a basement of a house & they needed reporting because it was recent enough to be a possible case of stolen goods or trace the owner type issue, or at least some other Law other than the Treasure Act. I have to say that one confused me.

Yeh that is pretty confusing, I guess you just have to do what you think is the right thing to do at the time if they are newer coins, cheers for the explaination

Basically, you can keep them (assuming you have the land-owners permission) & your breaking no Laws.

Sorry just seen your reply Crusador, thanks for clearing it up for me
