Hi everyone, :hello:

I've been listing things for the last few days. I kinda like the new Ebay, :icon_scratch: up to 50 free listings, no fees unless something sells. :dontknow: I think this will be more manageable and more profitable in the long run. If I Can list 50 things its more likely something will sell. I kinda like the new Ebay !! :hello2:

Keep @ it and HH !! :laughing7:

Me too. If a person isn't expecting something for nothing, they should do well and have fun on eBay. I know I do!

Completely agree. The only people who seem to have a problem with ebay have an "entitled" attitude about it.

Well I certainly have supported ebay with my purchases! Lol
Now I'm just starting to think about selling...lots of old clocks and pocket watches, tools ect.
Any advice on my first sales?

If your clocks and watches are expensive, insure them when you ship and build the cost of insurance into your shipping charges. I usually insure anything breakable that I list for $100 or more. Insurance isn't expensive but one lost or damaged expensive item can wipe out profits from a whole bunch of other sales. Good luck!

Better watch out!

You are going to start getting messages say you can list 60,000 free listing in the next 3 days. I always try to relist everything I have that did not sell. It seems these free bonus listing are helping ebay by generating more sales. There have been many times I sell something that has been listed 3-4 times.

If you insure through the post office, good luck on collecting if the item is damaged or lost. I think it's a huge rip off fostered by the P.O. From personal experience trying to recover on two different items a couple of years apart, not worth the headache. Finally gave up and never got a dime.

Lots of good insight here. :hello2:
Keep the comments coming. :notworthy:

I'm sorry but I disagree. I pay a lot of money to eBay every month and just like any other service that I pay for, I expect good service. The problem with eBay is that there is no real competition, which means they don't have to care about the seller. There are plenty of places for a buyer to buy, but very few places for a seller to sell.

Free listing is a gimmick as they always get you on the backend with final value fees when an item sells. You even pay the FVF on the shipping charges also. And since Ebay also owns Paypal they get you on those fees too.
Been selling on eBay for 14 years and used to make some decent $ but no so much anymore.
That being said, I have spent a TON on buying off eBay.

They get you??? You pay for a service. If you don't want to get got, don't utilize the service. Where else can you spend $10 at the thrift store and turn it into $100....consistently.

OK so your $10 item sells for $100. Deduct $11.50 for FVF then another $3.50 Then unless you, hit the postage right on the nose, you may lose a couple bucks there. THEN lets say the buyer is not happy, eBay freezes your account until it is resolved. You have to hope that the buyer returns the item undamaged (you would be surprised how many people try to "fix" something then return it after they screw it up) and hope you can resell it. This all takes a lot of time so unless you work for free you have to factor that in.
I am not saying that ebay is a big evil empire but they sure as hell are not seller friendly these days.
True story: I sold an item on eBay for $150. After receiving the item the buyer was not happy and filed an "item not as described" complaint. ebay froze my Paypal account until the item was returned. The buyer shipped package back to me with tracking which this info is sent to ebay. As soon as the "package" was delivered the buyer was refunded from my account. when I got home that day and opened the returned package I found a piece of treated wood 2" X 4" NOT the item I sold. Since I did not videotape the mailman delivering the package and me opening it, it was my word against his. He got my item for free and I got the shaft. I was however able to send a little karma back his way before it was over with.
Like I said before, I have been selling on ebay for 14 years and have sold thousands of items so my post was based on my vast experience on the site. Do you have similar history as a ebay seller vwayne or are you just one of those armchair quarterbacks that like to hear themselves talk?

^^^^ This... is a perfect example of why us sellers need to be able to leave negative feedback against bad buyers. Nothing "entitled" about Ebay tolerating thieves like the dirtbag who sent back a 2x4 instead of the item you shipped. As I've said in the past, Ebay was founded on a system of mutual trust that was based on mutual feedback. Clearly from this example, there are buyers who KNOW they have a free pass now and take advantage of that. I wish you all the best with your sales and I hope you make piles of money & never have to experience some of the things others of us have. But to have someone call us "entitled" because we told you the truth is a slap in the face.

I have been selling on Ebay since 1999, sold over 7000 items, have only had one returned. And it was returned because it was too big for the buyer(A ghost shrimp pump with a 40" barrel, he should have ordered one with a 30" barrel) Never had a SNAD case opened. Only lost one item in the USA(Envelope ripped and a book fell out), so now I ship just about everything in boxes. Had one attempted charge back, which I was covered by seller protection.(Item was delivered, buyers credit card got canceled later.)Never had to file an insurance claim.

I describe things in detail, take fairly good pictures(a lot of them on some items) and try to make my packing bullet proof.

Ebay has changed a lot, fees on shipping are wrong, but Ebay does give you the opportunity to sell around the world.

While I agree that EBay isnt perfect, I have yet to have an issue not resolved to my satisfaction. It seems to me that some of those who complain have never owned an actual brick and mortar business. You think EBay is a rip off? Try having $10,000 in overhead each month between rent, taxes, utilities, payroll etc etc etc. On top of all that, you wont let someone return something? The customer files a complaint with the credit card company and guess who wins the majority of the time? THE CUSTOMER.

I'm happy to pay my 10%.

Not to put too fine a point on it but most of us ebay sellers are actually paying a little more than 10%. Remember, if you use PayPal, they take 2.9% in addition to ebay's fee. That being said, I don't object because there are a boatload of items I have sold on ebay that I would never have been able to sell using just local advertising. Ebay provides a very valuable service indeed and, although there are a few things about ebay that irritate me a little, on balance on am quite happy with their service.

Boy are you right. My business post office is great, but the post office in the town I live in leaves a lot to be desired. Once I ordered a college book for my wife. It had a CD in it. When we got it in the mail it was too big for our box so the mailman rolled it up to fit. The CD survived but the book broke it's spine. I called the post office and directly spoke to the post mistress, told her the story and do you want to know the first thing she said?

DID YOU HAVE IT INSURED?

I never even got an apology out of her and she wouldn't transfer me to the hub center to talk to her boss. I have told this story many times. If the post office was a real business think of all the bad publicity I have generated.

It did have a happy ending. I called the book seller to see if he insured it. He didn't but, immediatly mailed me another copy for free. That one was put in the big package box next to my small mail box.
